DTD at MC #59

Hello everyone,

Well my vacation is about to end. I have to report to work on Monday, that is kind of too bad, I could easily get used to this "no work" thing. But the bills still have to be paid. So I'm back at it starting tomorrow.

Let's see what is happening in Delt land. First, I think that I need to remind you that there is only 10 days left for the rooms that are being held for us at the Best Western here in Marietta. The phone number is: 740-374-7211. We have 20 rooms being held for us, and the cost is about $75 per night. If you want to do a little leg work yourself, you can probably find a better price online. For other hotels in the area, check the chapter website and click on the link in the 40th anniversary section. That is in the middle top of the front page. You will notice that we have a tour of 507 Putnam scheduled, that is assuming we can make arrangements with the owners. Also, there is a tour of the campus listed. For those of you that haven't been back to Marietta in a while, the campus has changed quite a bit. There has been a lot of new construction, with more scheduled for the next couple of years.

I have had several people ask me about cost. The plan is for the weekend to cost no more than $50 per person. That will not include the cost of lodging or what ever the college will charge for its functions. There will be a cash bar at the Shrine Club and on the Valley Gem. We felt that there was no way we could afford to have an open bar at any of these functions, not only because some of the brothers may not drink, but also, we are talking about a FRATERNITY here. My goodness there isn't that much money in the world.

We have commiments from 4 brothers so far to be speakers at the dinner Saturday night. Greg Maloof, Ken Kavula, Rich Wolf and Adam Hopkins. We are still looking for speakers from the other eras of EY. If you feel comfortable speaking, drop me a line so we can save time for you. We are looking for a 10 minute limit. Ken has already committed to a power point presentation, so the computer will be there if anyone else wants to go that route.

We are also hoping for some representation from the International headquarters. I have had a commitment from Jim Russell, so hopefully he will be with us.

Now on to the letters that I've gotten from you guys this week.

Mark Schlicker sent this note. I hope all is well with your wife, Mark, but for sure she comes first. It does show that people are contacting others, I hope that the rest of you are talking the 40th up. See you all there.

really up in the air with the wife's back problems. Hope to get you the slides I
promised.

Al Head sent me this note, he is planning on being in Marietta. To those of you who may be on one of the 5 year cycles that the college pushes, that gives you 2 reasons to come back.

Congratulation on moving back to Marietta. I look fondly back on my time
there, and I would probably view living there as a return to my youth. Pay no
attention that what little hair I have left is white. Obvously, 2008 is also the
30 year for class of 78.

I know many from that class will also be in attendance. Your letters are
great Rick. It sounds from these letters that indeed DTD-EU chapter is doing
well. Thanks for the update. See you in October!

Hope you are enjoying Marietta. Spoke to Joe Doniger. By the way, Joe and I
were roommates for 3 years at Marietta. We had dinner last night with our wives
here in Florida and saw each other again for the first time in 32 years.

I wrote Shawn Selby concerning the blog he was going to write about his move to England. Here is the response he sent me. I haven't seen the blog entry yet, when I do, I'll let you all know.

Hi Rick.

Sorry I've been so out of touch. Things have been crazy here. We published
the first issue in December and have done one for January already and are doing
a second one this week for January. We go weekly the beginning of February.
We've also launched our Web site with daily breaking news and I've been
overseeing that as well.

But anyway in my precious spare time I've been looking for a flat. I'm
lodging in someone's spare room right now. But I've found a great flat in
Manchester's City Center, near my office. I get the keys tomorrow (Tuesday) and
I'll be moving in this week. Once I do that, I'll be ready to do a blog post. I
didn't want to do one earlier as I wanted to get "settled" first. And getting my
own flat makes me officially "settled."

I haven't heard from the undergrad you mentioned, so go ahead and forward the
note he sent to you to me!

Four Marietta students advance in W.Va. Theatre Auditions

SimoneNovember 30, 2007 -- Theatre students are accustomed to entertaining
audiences with their performances. But part of studying the performing arts is
learning how to be successful in the audition process, which even for veteran
actors is a nerve-racking process.
"While being a theatre major I am
certainly used to performing onstage, the stakes are raised so high at an
audition that it is hard not to get a bit nervous," said Patrick Simone '08.
In November, nearly a dozen Marietta College theatre students participated
in the first-round of stage tests during the West Virginia Theatre Conference
Screening Auditions, held in Inwood, W.Va. Four Marietta students—Simone, Maggie
Smith '09, Andrew Wind '10, and Stephanie Tett '10—scored in the top 40 percent
of the auditioning group, qualifying them to move on to the next round of tests,
which take place in March in Chattanooga, Tenn. Success at the next level will
ensure them a summer internship with the West Virginia Theatre Conference. Of
the 142 students who auditioned in November, only 58 students plus two
alternates were invited to the March auditions.
Theatre professor Jeff
Cordell accompanied the students to the auditions. Proud of what the students
learned and accomplished during this process, Cordell has high hopes for his
qualifiers and for the College's theatre department.
"The event is a major
experience for all students who attend it, as it allows them to see more of
their peers, to compare their work, and to recommit to their training in theatre
and to their education in general. I remain proud of both their preparation and
their professional attitudes at the event," Cordell said.
Auditioning for a
role can take months of preparation, but the audition itself may last only 60 to
90 seconds.
"It is mind boggling to think of how much time we put into such
a short period of acting. Now that is dedication," Tett said.
The students
agreed that what drew them to Marietta College was the theatre department. Each
of them saw something in Marietta's faculty and curriculum that they couldn't
get anywhere else.
"I saw that I would be able to explore all facets of
theatre including directing and playwriting, as well as technical aspects. After
visiting the college and meeting with the faculty of the theatre department, I
knew Marietta was the perfect fit for my personal style and needs," Wind said.
Cordell is proud of what the students who represent Marietta College have
done and very thankful for the students he has the chance to work with.
"For
my second year of teaching at Marietta, I am so grateful that I have great
students to work with and that the preparation in our department is connected to
the real world of working theatre," Cordell said.

Zach Gay qualified for the nationals in track and field. Hope that the qualification stands Zach. Interesting thing when I read the article, there was another Delt who had his college record beaten this year. Chad Showen is the Delt. Congratulations on an outstanding season so far Zach. Gay provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championships at Marietta's First
Glimpse Meet. Five school records also fall on Saturday Dec. 8, 2007

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College track & field officially kicked off its
indoor season Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon with a First Glimpse Meet at the Dyson
Baudo Recreation Center. The non-scoring meet, which also featured Concord
University from Athens, West Virginia, produced its share of individual
highlights. The story of the day came in the men's high jump, when sophomore
Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) cleared 2.01 meters (6-07), which provisionally
qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The event, hosted by Ohio Northern University, will take place March 14-15 in
Ada, Ohio.Five school-record performances accompanied Gay's effort on Saturday.
Junior Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) set a new school record en route to
winning the 800m Run. Mitchem finished in 1:57.60, breaking Pat Gragan's 1984
time of 1:57.70.Freshman Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) broke the
school record in the 200m Dash, finishing in 23.63 seconds. Alex Axelson held
the previous record with a 24.08-second performance in 2004.Freshman Seth
Beckner (Red House, W.Va./Buffalo) set a new standard in the Pole Vault,
clearing 4.30m (14-01). Chad Showen had the old record, a 4.26m (14-00) vault in
2005.Sophomore Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) broke the Lady Pioneers' school
record in the 3,000m Run. Robertson crossed the line11:07.72. Teammate Shannon
McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele) set the previous record, 11:35.66, at the meet
a year ago.Freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) broke Marietta's long jump
record with a mark of 4.97m (16-04). Melissa Schulte held the previous record, a
4.91m (16-01.50) jump at a meet last year. Beckner, Gay, Leach, Mitchem and
Robertson all qualified for the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, which
will be hosted by Otterbein College March 7-9, 2008. Six other Pioneers joined
them in qualifying for the Conference championships; junior Jesse Larrison
(Batavia) in the 800m Run (2:29.66), freshman Olivia Holiday
(McConnelsville/Morgan) in the Pole Vault (2.75m/9-01), senior Breanne Kosar
(Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central) and freshman Ericka Shafer (East Canton) in
the High Jump (1.52m/4-11.75), senior Harrison Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates
Chili) in the 3,000m Run (9:19/71) and junior Brian Pallini (Medina) in the Shot
Put (13.47m/44-02).Marietta is back in action January 19 when it plays host to a
group of schools for the Marietta Open #1, the second of six home meets during
the 2007-08 indoor season. Sophomore Zach Gay provisionally qualified for the
2008 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday
