Good evening everybody,
15 days to go! October 24th,,,, homecoming,,,, EY's 40th anniversary. There is still time to get it together and show up in Marietta.

For those of you planning on being with us, send your checks to Fergie. The cost is $50 per person if you wish to attend the whole weekend, if you can only make part of it the breakdown is $35 for the Banquet on Saturday night and $15 for the Valley Gem cruise on Friday night. The address for your check is: **removed for privacy reasons**. Please make your check payable to "Crescent Colony ofMarietta, Inc"

As of this afternoon, we had checks from 65 people, about 40 of them were Delts and the rest are guests. Fergie expects that there will beabout 100 for the Valley Gem and 125 to 150 for the banquet. I think that is pretty good, considering we haven't yet reached 400 initated men yet at EY.

If you are interested in viewing the most recent undergraduate event, the serenading of a sorority after its rush, please go to the chapter website and click on the link at the top of the home page. I think they were even singing on key! http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/

Speaking of the undergrads, they just finished rush and pledged 14 men. Pretty special, and the guys seemed to me to be good men. I stopped by the house and had a nice conversation with several of them.

Let's see what emails I have received since the last email to you guys. Craig Sundstrom sent me this email about his attendence.

Hey Rick!
Sorry if I've already noted this to you, but I just wanted to clarify that I will be in attendance AND bringing a guest. I included that
with my RSVP and check, but wanted to be sure that information made your list
(the one I see in the e-mails) as well.

I hope you are well and are as excited about the 40th as I
am. Carri (my girlfriend) and I will be arriving
late Thursday night. See you then!

All the best,
Craig D. Sundstrom

Just want to let you know, I fixed it... from Bob Kubota, he will behere also. I love it, this should be a great weekend.

It looks like I should be home and plan on attending Will send Bob my check in
next day or so See you there

Bob Kubota

Both of those guys are past Presidents. It looks like we will have quite a few of them in attendence. Unfortunately, the President we had when I was VP doesn't look like he will be there, Mark Russell. Too bad.

Jordan Herrick sent me this note, another person that will be joining us.

Rick,
Just wanted to add another name to the 2000s list: Jason Strawsburg plus a date. I will keep you updated if any more names come in.
Thanks, Jordan

Another one from my era has stepped up... Glad to hear you will be with us Steve! Try to talk Andy James into coming will you?

Dear Brother Delts & Rick,
Just touching base to inform you I plan to attend as many of the Saturday
Oct. 25th scheduled events as possible. I mailed my check to Bob Ferguson for
the Dinner & Program on Sat. pm this past Monday. Will look forward
to meeting as many current undergrads and my EY Delt alum brothers as time
permits!
Fraternally Yours,
Steve Critchlow '72

Ken Weaver will be with us for the banquet, he's another President - a 2 term guy. I'm looking forward to seeing you again, Ken.

Rick,
Thank-you for working towards bringing all of the brothers together. I am planning on being there, but I will be coaching a high school football game on Friday night. So I will arrive Saturday morning. My wife will be with me.
See you then,
Ken Weaver Class of 1975

I have some new and updated email addresses for you: First I will list the new pledges. Congratulation guys! You are joining a great fraternity and we look forward to all the great things you will do to take EY to greater heights! Good luck.

Good evening guys,

Well there are only 28 days left before homecoming. The number of paid reservations is rising on almost a daily basis. I just got an updated list of attendees from Jordan Herrick, so the weekend is looking like there will be a bunch of us. And the decade of the 2000's looks like it has overtaken the 1970's.

There have been some questions concerning cost. While we hope that everyone will be able to attend the whole weekend, if you can't make it to some of the events, here are the prices broken down. The river cruise on Friday night is $15 and the banquet on Saturday night is $35. That is per person.

I got a question about a couple of children and the cost for them at the banquet. I really can't answer that question at this point, I will have to discuss it with the committee and I'll let you know individually, but I'm sure it will be a reduced cost, after all how much can a 2 year old eat? I'll send you an email in the next couple of days.

Along this same line, I have been asked how much of the weekend will be open to friends and spouses. Almost the whole weekend is family friendly, the only function that is only for brothers, is the ritual meeting. That will be Sunday morning in McDonough Hall on campus. Please, plan on including your special person in the whole weekend.

We are asking that your payment be sent to Bob Ferguson at **remmoved for privacy reasons** no later than October 10th so we can let the caterers know how many to plan on feeding. Make your check payable to "Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc." Also, Bob Ferguson and Jon Hartshorn, have asked that there be no one staying at the house on this weekend other than those brothers actually living there. The feeling is that there will be too much going on at the house for the brothers to keep up with and have alums sleeping there as well. Thank you for your help in this matter.

At the end of this email, I will include the schedule of events for the weekend, and the names of those that are planning on attending. Unfortunately, I got an email today from one of the guys having to uncommit, due to the health of his wife. I'm sorry to hear about it Joe, hopefully she will be well soon. He has reservations for a room already, if you are interested in using his room, please contact him soon. He is planning on cancelling the reservation in the next couple of weeks. His email address is: Joe Kirby, **removed** I'm sure that Bob Exten and John DeVito will give you a good accounting of what went on.

Dave Broome sent me a rather long email about the booklet that he is working on. He promises that it will be ready on time and tells me that it is looking pretty good. I'll just copy his note so you can send him the help he needs. Please remember, though he says that he works well under pressure, time is getting VERY short for his work. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

The "booklet" which we have been discussing for nearly a year is almost
entirely a collection of first-person accounts of our chapter's history -from
the beginning to the present day, as told by various alums. It is
not a photo album (although a few images will be included), nor is it a dry
third-person text of "how it all started." It was (and is) my hope that
these stories will breathe life into the chapter's history, and provide present
and future undergraduates (as well as alumni) with a permanent reference to
prove that the Delt experience at Marietta is a special one. I have very
very few scanned photographic images to use in this booklet...All of those whch
you sent to me are currently included in some form. I was trying to attach
at least one image to each story, but there aren't enough images to go
around.

If any scanned images are out there that have a somewhat-interesting story
attached, there is still time to include it -just send it to me as soon as
possible! And- keep in mind, that it is essential that I
know the names people in photographs (and graduation year, if possible).

Should anyone else want to immortablize their thoughts for this project,
there is currently an opportunity to fill in the gaps on the following
subjects: Except for Shawn Selby's account of the first
Hugh Shields award (1991), there are no other stories from the 1990s.

Perhaps a couple of other stories from that decade would help stretch the
narrative into the present day.

For example: 1. After winning the first Hugh Shields award, the chapter's performance accelerated, and by the 25th anniversary in 1993, numbers and general undergraduate enthusiasm were at a high point. Anyone from that period care to share some of the afterglow?

2. Alternatively, by 1999, the chapter's numbers had fallen into single-digits. Something cathartic happened among those few remaining Delt undergraduates to turn things back around- and they succeeded. What was it? How did you do it? Keep in mind that the chapter's fortunes have always been very cyclical. In the future, perhaps another group of EY Delts could find inspiration in your story.

3. Photos from the move in 1984 from 507 Putnam St to 219 4th St I have. What I don't have is any accompanying commentary. Any alums from the 1983-84 school year care to get in on this.

4. Could someome who lived in that abomination known as Douglas Putnam Hall (the dormitory for freshmen men) provide an account of what it was like to live there? I only stepped in there a couple of times -and that was plenty creepy enough for me.

5. What happened on the Marietta Campus on the morning of Sept 11, 2001? Were classes cancelled? Was there a special message to the student body from the administration?

.........Thanks in advance for any input that other alums may have on these subjects; please remember to identify yourselves by full name and graduation year.

But- we're in the home-stretch now, so it would need to be done very soon. Scanned images are preferable, and those can be sent directly to me at **removed** ...again, sooner -rather than later- is preferable. In any case, written personal accounts of the highlights (and lowlights) of chapter history are preferable -and any late submissions are welcome.

Fraternally, Dave Broome, '88

Please guys, help him out. This booklet is something that all Delts will cherish, I think.

Debby Smith is our first Little Sister that is committed to coming to our 40th. There is still time for the rest of you ladies to make your plans. Hope that you all will be able to join us Here is her note.

Dear Rick,
I am one of the missing little sisters class of 1976, Deborah (Debby) Smith. My husband (David Seibert) and I are planning to come to homecoming. At this time we are not sure which functions we are attending as I am also an AST and we will be splitting our time between the two groups.

Will we be able to pay for only the functions we attend? At this time we are considering the social hour at the Shrine Club, tail gating prior to football game, homecoming parade, and possibly the banquet. Can you update me on those.

We will be staying at the Best Western on Muskingum Drive. Please include me on the e-mail updates.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. Debby Smith

Hello everybody,
Well I was going to write this yesterday, but I decided to adopt a dog from the Humane Society and had to get the house (and backyard) ready for a dog. So I had to put it off until today, which turned out to be a good thing. I was getting ready to go pick "Buddy" (I think that's the name I'll give him, not sure yet) when my phone rang. It was a call from Dean "Dreamer" Costilow - '75. He stopped in for a minute while on his way to Kentuky to see his son play soccer.

He dropped off his pledge paddle and a copy of the Delt Shield. I'll be dropping them off at the house in the next day or so. Unfortunately, he doesn't think that he will be able to make the 40th. I'm hoping that he is able to adjust his schedule. He did request that I pass his best wishes to everyone, especially the guys he went to school with.

He told me that he has 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. All of them are grown and out of the house now, so he has joined that club known as the "empty nesters." It was really nice to see Dean, we sure did some dumb things, back in the day. A lot of fun though.

We are getting all of the plans finalized for the 40th, Fergie seems to feel that it is all coming together nicely, me, I'm pretty nervous about it all. Some of the "improtant" people that we have scheduled to be there are Bruce Peterson, Northern Division President, someone from the Central Office, perhaps Garth Eberhart, Director of Chapter Services. (Jim Russell, who had promised to be with us, had to back out due to the fact that the Purdue Delts are dedicating thier new house that same weekend. And he couldn't talk them into delaying the dedication. So I guess I won't send him any "hate mail"), and someone from the Arch Chapter. Pretty impresive for us. Fergie casts a long shadow, I guess. Plus the undergrads are doing a really good job.

We are now just 45 days from Homecoming. Time is getting short (finally, it seems as if I have been plugging this forever). However we need to get it into gear as far as who is coming. I know that a lot of you have let me know of your intention to be here, and that is wonderful. We are going to have a great turnout. There are going to be a lot of memories shared and a bunch of lies told, I'm sure.

However, now is the time to step up and get your money in. Without payments, it is pretty hard to go to the Shriners and tell them how many to expect for the banquet on Saturday. Also, it is hard to tell the caterers how much food and drink to bring for the Valley Gem river ride. While the drink part will be a cash bar, the food will be part of the price you are paying, and as you can understand, we don't want to buy what we don't need.

Fergie has asked that the deadline for payment be set at October 10th. That's 2 weeks before Homecoming, and we really need to know by then.

I have been asked by a few alums what the cost will be if they can only make the banquet (or the Valley Gem). As much as we hope that you will be able to make it for the entire weekend, we have established a price for each event. The Valley Gem will be $15 and the Banquet is $35. That gets you to the price of $50 for the weekend that is per person. I hope that you all will be able to attend everything and enjoy yourselves.

Please make your check payable to: Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc. and send it to Bob Ferguson, **removed for privacy reasons**. (If you wish to enclose anything extra, there will be no complaints from House Corp, I'm sure!) If you are bringing someone with you please let us know thier name so we can make a nametag for them. Also if there is any other information (like class year, Greek organization, etc) include that, in case we don't already know it.

So far, we have received payment from 19 Delts and a total of 32 people. That's pretty good for this early, but please get your checks written. That is out of 99 people that have said they are coming. When all is said and done, I expect that we will have 150+ there. Be one of the attendees.

Also, I got the following news from the President of House Corp and our Chapter Advisor. For this homecoming, please there is no "camping out" or sleeping at the house allowed. The feeling is that there will just be too many people in Marietta this weekend and the undergrads will have thier hands full keeping up with the house as it is. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.

Let's see what I have heard from Delts since the last time. Nick Alyward sent me the following note, he's our first chapter consultant. Any of you out there on the upper east coast get ahold of Nick and visit for a bit.

Rick,
I plan on being at the 40th. I'll get the check to Ferg. Also, since I will be traveling for the fraternity this year, if any alums are in the areas I am traveling, I'd love to meet up with them and hear about their times at Marietta. I will be traveling the east coast from Maine to D.C. and then all of Pennsylvania. Let me know.
Thanks! Nick Aylward '08

Kevin Oliphant sent me this message. He forgot to include his phone number so I had to go back and ask for it. I'm off that whole week Ollie, you gonna help me not remember it? Here's his phone number, give him a call - **removed**

Hey Rick!
Pass along for any Delts who are in early for the weekend if they'd like to meet for lunch on Friday. Im just 15 minutes away in Vienna WV and would like a chance to catch up at the Townhouse or the Galley or one of the old hangouts from college days. May even have a beer or two.

Wiona Porath (Mike's wife and social secretary) sent along this note. And by the way, they are included on the list now. I'm looking forward to meeting her, she is a well of information. The note about the sorority houses is concerning the ongoing debate about relocating the Delts.

Apparently our email got lost. We responded that we will be attending the40th, but sadly we aren't on the list :( Mike Porath, '90 and Wiona Altic Porath.

Note on Sorority Houses...all but one were owned by the chapters and the one the college owned is now no longer...sad for me and my sisters

Don't forget that the college did own the Tri-Sigma House and look what happend to us...they stole our house and made it into the Admissions office. Now we aren't even on campus. The college never sent any word to the alums that I am aware of when the chapter was having this happen.Anyway, can you add Michael and I to the list of '90's
Thanks,Wiona

Pete Weiner sent me the following note. Unfortunately, in a following email he determined that he wasn't going to be able to make the timing work. So he won't be joining us. Sorry to hear that Peter, maybe next year.

Hey Big Bro,
My wife, Karen, and I are trying to finalize our plans for our yearly obligations to family in Charleston and Cincinnati . I'm pushing for the time around Homecoming so we can make the side trip to Marietta to coinside. But incase our timing is off know that I am thinking of you guys.

Also I'm going to try to make the side trip just to sya hey and if we can hook up it
would be great.

Remember I can always be reached through my Web Site**removed** or through
my Dell cell phone **removed**( no I do not advocate Dell, I just fix them).
Peter

Shawn Selby sends his greetings from the old country. I used to be able to make the claim of coming the greatest distance to these things, but you have beaten my record, Shawn. I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Hi Rick
I bid you Purple, White and Gold greetings from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland!

Just last week I finally booked my flight back to North America! I'm flying directly from Manchester to Toronto on Friday, Oct. 17. I'll spend that weekend in Toronto seeing my much-missed friends there. Then on the Monday I'll head to Detroit where I will spend a few days before coming down to Marietta on the 23rd or 24th. After Homecoming, it is back to Toronto via Detroit for a nonstop flight back to Manchester on Oct. 27. By my calculations, the distance between Manchester, England, and Marietta is 3,695 miles.

If I can be bothered to make the cross-ocean, continent-hopping trip, well then, none of our Brothers have much of an excuse for not making the trip, from where I sit. :-)

(And I will happily buy a drink for any Brother who has travelled a farther distance to get to Marietta!)

As for everyone else, I suggest they start memorising the words to "God Save the Queen" and "Rule Britannia".
Shawn Selby '92

Tim Parsons sent me some pictures of the newest Delt Legacy - Jacob Timothy Parsons. I won't attempt to post them here, because I send this to some people at work and you know how that goes. But I will attempt to get them to the chapter so they can be posted on the website. He's a good looking guy Tim. Congratulations.

Debby (Smith) Seibert, one of our missing Little Sisters sent me the following note. Debby, I apologize for not responding to you directly (which I will correct when I finish this) but yes, you can only attend the things you wish to. See above.

Dear Rick,
I am one of the missing little sisters class of 1976, Deborah (Debby) Smith. My husband (David Seibert) and I are planning to come to homecoming. At this time we are not sure which functions we are attending as I am also an AST and we will be splitting our time between the two groups.

Debby

Brian Stone sent me the following note, as you can all see the number of Alums planning on coming back is increasing. Don't be left out!

Hey Rick.
You are doing a great job with keeping us all informed. I've been trying to work things out to get back for homecoming and I have finally got everything in order.

I just made my plane and hotel reservations so I will be coming back. So put me down for 1. I will be getting my check on to Fergie as soon as possible.

I should be into Marietta some time around noon on Friday, or maybe earlier
depending how fast my rental car is.
Fraternally Brian Stone 1997

I spoke to Cowboy Santini and he said that he would attend as many of the functions as possible depending on the schedule of his daughter and the state soccer tournement. Good luck to her Cowboy, I hope she makes the state finals and wins, but I'd like to see you at homecoming also...(Of curse so would Bob Kavula!)

That's all I have for this week. Remember October is right around the corner! See you all at homecoming. Have a great week, Rick Neel '73

DTD at MC #69

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Hello everybody!

Well it's interesting, here we are with email #69, and that is the year I graduated from High School. I still remember our "unofficial" class motto. I have no idea what the official one was however. "Sin, Sex, Booze and Wine, we're the class of '69." Do you remember your motto?

Karnea is over, and school is about to begin. Classes begin on August 25, and the undergrads are beginning to move back into the house. I stopped by this morning and ran into a few of the guys. They told me that we are expecting to begin the fall semester with 33 brothers returning. Several of last years freshman decided not to return to school for various reasons, something that happens at colleges and universities every year. We wish them the best in thier futures, and hope they stay in touch with us. Because now, guys, you are alumni!

The goal for recruitment for this year is 22 men. I was told that breaks down into 18 in the fall and 4 for the spring rush. So the undergrads have thier work cut out for them.

The last couple of days have been move in days for the freshmen, and the Delts were there to help out. They provided strong backs to help move the new students into the dorms. And while they were doing that, they got to meet a lot of the new freshmen men. That should help them with rush. Getting a headstart on the process. (oh, by the way, they got to meet the new freshmen women also!)

The Delts had some good news, from spring semester. I think I reported it earlier, but in case I didn't, or you missed it, the guys finished last semester with a 3.05 GPA. Bravo!

Oh! I almost forgot, Homecoming is in only 2 months. Two months and two days to be exact, and with homecoming, is our 40th anniversary. I hope that you have made your plans and are just waiting to send in your check. If that is the case, the cost is $50 per person, please send your check, made out to, Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc. and send it to Bob Ferguson at **removed for privacy reasons**. I will be posting the schedule of events and the names of those people who have let us know they are coming at the end of this email.

I got the chance to see Rich Wolf last week, he was in the area to see his in-laws. We had dinner and swapped memories. It's funny how different things stick with you that others have forgotten. But when we told a story, the other one of us remembered the incident, even if we didn't recall it originally. That was fun.

There is still some commentary concerning the proposed new living quarters for the Delts. I got several notes from Rick Kramer and Todd Myers. Both of them had interesting suggestions as far as alternative housing for the chapter. I referred them to Ferg and Hartsy, but haven't heard anything back from either one of them since Karnea. Ferg said that they were planning on having some discussions with people from the central office, so we might have some better insight into the situation. When I hear something, I"ll let you all know.

Since the last email, I have gotten the addresses from some of the lost brothers. I wrote to them, but haven't heard anything back yet. None the less, welcome home guys! I hope you find time to share with us. The names and addresses are: Bruce Goldfarb, Gordon Turner, and Dean Kilton. If these guys are from your era and you know them, send them a note and get back in touch with an old friend.

I got Dean's information from Nick Aylward, EU's first chapter consultant. Evidently Dean wandered into the Central Office and was looking for information about EU and wanting to get back in touch with the fraternity. Here we are Dean, welcome!

Let's see who wrote since the last time. I received the following note from Bob Kavula. It was copied to me when he sent it to Cowboy Santini and Matt Sutko. I hope that he talked you two guys into coming. (I guess I'll have to call them and bug them).

OK,If I can drag my fat ass up from Dallas, certainly you guys can make it :) Especially you Cowboy.......We're arriving Thursday night and will be at the Townhouse for drinks. Staying at the Lafayette and will be there for the 30th thing on Friday night.

I went to my wife's 30th high school reunion last weekend and it was kind of fun and I didn't know anyone. It's a once in a lifetime chance guys to have the 40th Fraternity party and our 30th Class reunion.

Hope to see you both.

Todd Myers sent the following note in:

Rick,I plan to attend homecoming and will get my check into Fergie,
Thanks,Todd Myers '91

Chris Kurtz sent me the following note. In answer to your question about the sororities, they all own thier own houses I believe, so no they won't be moving into the type of arrangements we are talking about. And no, it will not be a problem if you bring your children. The whole weekend is open to everybody, with the exception of the initiation on Sunday.

Hello everyone, I am sorry I have not been reading all of the recent emails but I do appreciate receiving them. As I have been out of the loop, what is going on with the sororities? Are they being moved there as well?

I look forward to seeing everyone at homecoming. Rick please put me down for at least 1+ my wife Jessica. ( I might be bringing our 2 kids in tow, is that a problem? I've never come to a homecoming with kids so...)

My best to everyone, especially my brothers who I look forward to celebrating our 15th reunion together, Andy, Brian, J.P., Xan, Seth (hope you can make it, sorry to hear about your accident), Graham, Greg, Jimmy and Tony (does Tony come back to homecoming?)

All the best,Chris Kurtz
PS Join facebook, I have been able to reconnect with a bunch of folks from my MC days.

That's a long list of brothers he wants to see, are you all signed up? If not, what are you waiting for? Now I do have to admit feeling shock, hurt and betrayal that someone (other than my brother, Jim) actually says he doesn't read all of these things! How about you Shawn Selby? I haven't had any criticism of my writing skills for quite a while now. Am I getting better???

I got the following from Bruce Masatsugu, unfortunatly he won't be on the river cruise. All I can say is "Drive Faster, Bruce!" Just kidding, drive safely, and I'll catch up with you at the Town House! Of course you could take an earlier flight.

Rick, Thanks for all the updates.

It's been fun reading about all the experiences at DTD through the years. Couple of things. First, it'll be just me for the dinner on Saturday night so remove the "+1". Also, I haven't seen anything about a count for the river cruise, but I don't think I'll be able to make it. Baring any delays, I'm arriving in Columbus at 5:40 so I'll probably arrive in Marietta sometime after 8. I'll catch up with you after the cruise (Town House?)

Either call me at **removed** or give me your number and I'll call you sometime after 10. Looking forward to seeing everyone in a couple of months.

Bruce Masatsugu '75

Here are the names of the guys who will be making presentations at the banquet: Remember guys, keep it between 10 and 15 minutes, the subject matter should be about DTD and MC, and there will be ladies and perhaps children in the audience. If you are interested in speaking, let me know. There will be a computer there if you wish to do a power point... Speaking will be, Ken Kavula, Greg Maloof, Rich Wolf, Shawn Selby, Brian Rothenberg, Don Wolfe, Jordon Herrick, and Chris Goebel.

If anyone is in conact with Chris Goebel, please send me his phone number. He has evidently changed his email address, and I need to speak to him. Thanks.

That's all I have for this week. Time is getting short, and I'm getting pretty excited. I hope you are too.

Have a good weekend, Rick Neel '73

Hello everyone,

I just received some good news concerning one of our brothers. Seth Pitasky, who was involved in a serious car accident about 18 months ago, recently had back surgery and is walking pain free for the first time since the accident.

I understand that he was hit by a driunk driver about 1.5 miles from his home. This just reinforces the point that we should never drink and drive. Please, if you are planning on drinking, either have a designated driver, or make other plans for transportation.

I got the following note from Jeremy Dornon, giving me heck for my inability to spell! Sorry Jeremy, it's fixed and I'll try not to do it again! I'm going to enjoy meeting the Delt Legacy you will be bringing.

Rick...As always, love receiving the updates in the inbox. Just a quick note, I am still attending the 40th, but I will be bringing someone, so please note me as +1 on the attendees list. Also, when you update the attendees list, my last name is spelled 'Dornon' not 'Dornan'. Nothing major, just fyi! Can't wait to kicking back at the TH with the brothers, and letting the majority of the guys meet my 2 yr old son, Braxton. Also a future Delt. :)

Tim Cox sent me the following note. I had him listed as an "I think" on the attendees list. Here he makes it official.

Hey Rick, Just wanted to let you know that I will definitely be attending the 40th festivities. What are the exact dates again?

Thanks,Tim CoxClass of '99

I answered Tim directly with the dates, but here they are along with the cost involved. Homecoming is October 24-26. And the cost is $50 per person attending. Please make your check payable to Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc Send it to Bob Ferguson, **removed for privacy reasons** I hope to see many of you there.

Chad Rhodes sent me this note, he'll be there, how about you?

Rick, I'll be at the 40th, along with my wife, Krista. We've got the hotel reservations and the check will be in the mail shortly. I'm looking forward to meeting you and others and to catching up with old friends. Thanks for all of your work on the newsletter.

Chad Rhoads Class of 1995

Murray Talasnik sent me the following note. I suggested that he contact the alumni office, if any of you have a better suggestion for him, please drop him a line.

Hi all.
I was recently unpacking some long lost boxes and found some of my old Marietta College yearbooks. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost the 1971 yearbook, the year of my graduation. If anyone has any idaes about how I might find a replacement, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.
Murray Talasnik, class of 1971

I got this email from Hartsy, President of House Corp., concerning our meeting last week with the college about housing options. First of all, let me say that I received many very good replies last time I wrote. To all of you "Thank you." Your feelings were presented to the college by me when we met.

After some thought and further conversation with Ferg and Andy Longo, here's how I see our realistic options:

#1) We stay where we are as long as we can, and when we get word we have to leave, we look again at options.
#2) Let MC know that we are OK with the moving to the new residence hall, and wait to see what we get.
#3) Find a way to get some money into the new residence hall project, and continue to partner with the college.

There are other possibilities, but I see them all as variations of the above.

Right now I slightly favor #2 over #3, with #1 a distant 3rd. My stance on #3 could improve if I knew more about how we could get some form of equity stake in the residence hall. I lean toward #2 thinking that there may be more options in a few years, more time for fundraising, and in the mean time we have decent housing.

I'd be higher on #1 if we owned 219 4th right now. As Andy mentioned to me, we have no property to sell or rent if we just let the college move us.

The down side of #2 is that if we don't like what we get, we may be back to moving again in a few years.

That's all for now. See you guys soon.
Jon Hartshorn, ASQ CMQ/OE

Today, I sat down with Fergie and using Hartsy's email as a basis for discussion, put together the following thoughts.

From our talk with the college, they are planning on spending $200 a square foot to build the new residence hall. That means for us to have a 5000 sq ft house of our own, it would cost us $1,000,000. I don't see that happening, do you?

Secondly, the college is about $30,000,000 in debt, so this building is probably our only opportunity for new quarters in the forseeable future. Several thoughts came to mind as we were barnstorming, here are some of them in no particular order.

Fraternity size comes and goes. In 2000 we had 4 or 5 members, in 2006 we had 50, in 2008 we will start with 30+. We have been up and down for our entire history (as have all the other fraternities). So where will we be in 5 years? How about 10? It is impossible to know, but if we have our own house, we will have to pay for it. That means members, it would be a terrible thing (to my mind) to have to recruit men just to fill a house, not because they are quality people.

Right now, DTD is held in pretty high regard by the administration of the college. Who is to say what the case will be in 5 or 10 years. The people in charge with MC are in thier late 50's and early 60's. Perhaps thier replacements will be progreek, but maybe not. What do we do then?

Next, Lynne Miller, in her email said that the college was planning on providing the chapter with "adequate space" for meeting rooms and storage for our ritual equipment. The meeting mentioned that the college figured on 15 sq. ft. per student. If we figure the Delts get a membership of 60, that would give us 900 sq. ft. in public area. Of course we don't have 60 members. The college did seem receptive to our needs for more room however. It may become necessary for us to contribute if we wish for more space than they plan on for us. Right now, in the 4th St. Shelter, the back room (as best we could tell from outside) appears to be 32x23 (736 sq ft) for the chapter room and 32x42 (1344 sq ft) for the total addition. As I write that, it doesn't seem right. The total is close to accurate, not sure on the chapter room.

Unfortunately, we were ncluded in this discussion just recently, and as the discussion unfolded, it became pretty obvious that we should have been included 6 months ago, so we could have been better prepared. As of the time of our meeting, the college hadn't been able to arrange anything with the LCA so we don't know what thier thinking on this subject is.

When House Corp first began the discussion on this subject, our best thought was having our fraternity house on the front of a building and a dorm behind it. Actually that is what the college is proposing. We will have our own entrance at one end of the new hall, with our letters above the entrance. Beds for approximately 15 members (that is negotiable - but keep in mind, we weren't able to fill the house we have this year), dedicated outdoor space like we have now, for volleyball, etc., semi-private bathrooms (a definate improvement from what we have now), etc.

To reiterate what Hartsy said, here are the options I see for us.

#1 - Building of our own. The cost would be about $1 million. We don't have that much, and the cash flow options don't appear to make it workable. Even if we could get $300,000 from members (that's $750 each from 400 members - which we don't have yet) it still wouldn't work. And that is assuming we could get the land from Marietta College.

#2 - Stay where we are. Assuming that the college finds that our house is usable for the next 10 years at a reasonable cost, what happens in 10 years? That house won't last forever, as much as we would like it to. Remember, the college owns the house, they can decide it isn't cost effective at any time.

#3 - Move to a house on 4th St. (like the ATO's are in). They sleep 60. Do we want to have people sharing the house that aren't Delts? Remember, we have never had 60 in our history. It's an option, the college likes us right now.

#4 - Work with the college, move into the new residence hall and make it our own. This may cost us some money (probalbly will) to get enough common space to serve our needs.

#5 - Something else. There is always another option that hasn't been thought of.

My biggest concern is that we keep a level playing field. The ATO's will stay where they are, on 4th St. The assumption is that the DU's will be back in 2011, and they will be back in thier house. Will that put us at a competitive disadvantage?

Sorry this is so long. But I felt it needed to be. See you in October!

Have a great week. Rick Neel '73

Hello everyone,
I hope that you all had a great weekend, and are enjoying your summer.
For me, moving home to Marietta has been just great. 2 weeks ago, I got to attend the Riverfront Roar, the powerboat races that Marietta has every summer. This year it was the world championship for Div. 2 and 3. Pretty exciting.

During the weekend, I got together with Matt Dole, Matt Joy (and his 4 year old son - a future Delt for sure!), Brian Wolf, and Trevor Brown. Trevor gave me a well deserved hard time for not having him included in the list of attendees for the 40th. It's been taken care of Trevor. See you in October.

Matt Joy said that he would be around for part of the festivities at least, he wasn't sure how much time he could spend with us though. Matt Dole told me that Brian would be there also. Brian, please let me know if you will be participating in the whole weekend and if you will be bringing anyone with you. That way I can add you to the list of attendees.

For those who need the address and info on where to send your money, the cost is $50.00 per person. Send your check, payable to "Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc." to Bob Ferguson, **removed for privacy reasons** I'll post our schedule of events at the end of this email, as well as the attendees. Please get in touch if you are coming and don't see your name.

Eric Gustafson '97 sent me a note letting me know he is planning on coming. And Casey Trail says he is bringing his girlfriend.

A few emails ago, I sent a picture from the Initiation Banquet out because Dave Broome needed to know the names of the people in it. Ken Kavula said that he would try to identify everyone for us. So far he has sent this message:

Got it this time - and am amused to see the back of my head and my hand as
I direct the new Delts in their first official rendition of Delta Shelter! I'll work on the other names in the next few days and get back to you.

Hope you haven't forgotten me Ken. Time is beginning to be a factor for Dave to get the booklet put together. Hard as it is to believe, we are only 4 months away!

Scott Frasca sent me the following note, I'm sorry to hear that you won't be able to make it to the 40th. I hope that you enjoy your move to Maine. Will you be anywhere near Bangor? That's where Mark Russell lives. Make note of his new address.

HI Rick! You are doing a great job keeping us all in touch!
Unfortunately a move to ME and the construction of our new house is going to
keep me from joining all our Brothers in Marietta for the celebration. Please note my new email address: **removed**. Will be issued a new one late this year when we get moved into the new house ... living in temporary quarters for now!

Thanks! Scott

VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ!!!
I recently received the following email from the college. As you all are aware, our Shelter is in need of being replaced. The college is planning on building a new residence hall (which is sorely needed) and is thinking of putting the Delts and LCA's in part of the new building. There will be a conference call next week that will include Hartsy, Fergie, Andy Longo (from the Central Office), me and the college to discuss this. Please read the following email, and if you have any comments that you would like to be included in our discussion, let one of us know. If you don't let us know what your feelings are, we will not be able to let the college know what you think. Thank you. Here are the other 2 email addresses: Hartsy **removed** and Fergie **removed**

Hey guys!
I have some (potential) exciting news to share with you!

Recently theCollege has decided to move forward with plans for building a new residence hall which will be located on the corner of Putnam and 7th street (beside McCoy in the current parking area). Eventually, this hall will replace Parsons, which we all know is in poor condition. That said, we also know that the current housing situations for our three fraternities are not the best for any chapter due to issues with facility size and condition. What we have now is the perfect opportunity for all three chapters to have brand new housing in the new residence hall.

Before you get too excited, let me explain a few things. First of all, this is not set in stone. However, if it happens, it would work something like this...each fraternity would have their own floor in the hall. As with your current housing situation, you would be allowed to decorate/paint, etc. with approval from Residence Life. The structural design has not been completed, but we would make sure you have adequate space for chapter meetings and secured storage space for ritual equipment, etc.

You would also have enough bed spaces that would be neither to large or too small (probably closest to the Delt's housingcapacity). We would want to make sure that you feel that this is your space and home. What I need from you now is suggestions for what kinds of elements you would like to see (i.e. as I mentioned before, secured storage for ritual equipment) in your potential living environment. I wouldappreciate any feedback ASAP as we are moving forward with this quickly. If you need to, please solicit ideas from other members. I hope you will see this as an exciting time for Fraternity Life at Marietta.

YOU have the opportunity to create a new living space for your fraternity that will meet the needs of the organization. I will keep you updated as I learn more. Thanks so much guys!
Take care!~Lynne =)

That's all I have for this time, there wasn't much news from brothers. But I thought that it was pretty important that you be informed about what the college is thinking, concerning housing for the undergrads. Please get back with me as soon as you can, so we can share your input with the college. Rick Neel '73

Good morning to everyone,

There's not a lot going on in the Marietta Delt world this week, but I have received some notes from people after my last email. Plus, I wanted to let everyone know that on the Blog site; http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com I have posted some of the early emails in this series. Joe Mester sent me most of them. So we are now complete with the exception of #6 and 7. If by some miracle, you still have them saved, please send them to me so we can be complete.

As I was reviewing the blog, I found where we had had a comment from one of us. Scott Gilmore sent in a comment to one of them. I'm sorry it took me so long to notice your comment Scott, I vow to do better in the future. If you are still reading these through the blog, please send a note to the chapter at www.marietta.edu/~delts and give them your email address so we can get you added to our lists. Here is the note that Scott left:

Here I am,long lost and retired Scott Gilmore, '79. Anyone remember
LB?

Wow what memories came rushing back to me after visiting this site. Great job you guys!!! Totally awesome.

Just a brief history update on me...retired 26 yrs USAF and also did 5 yrs as a civil servant. Yes, I was only at MC for year 75/76 but did return for 79/80 (VP).

I'm married with two sons, one itn the Navy and the other attending Texas Tech in the fall, maybe another Delt in the family.

Hope to make it to the 40th and see everyone well!! Even BAM!!
Scott

It's great to be found by one of the missing. Good to hear from you Scott.

Goose Kitson sent me the following note, it is meant for all of the Columbus Delts. Perhaps there can be a Columbus EY alumni chapter meeting like we had in Tucson last winter. Let me know how it works out Goose. If I can be of service, let me know.

Hey Rick,
It's GooSe class of 06-08. I just wanted to update you and others as to the whereabouts of a few recent alums. Myself, Ashley Wollam, Jeffrey Wojton, and Sergio Periera Fajardo Jr. are currently residing in Columbus while Wojton becomes a Neurosurgeon, Ashley works as a Business analyst, Sergio watches the EuroCup and I work at an IT firm, Teamwork Solutions.

I know that Christopher Devine has also moved to Columbus doing really well within the realm of Graphic Design and computer stuff.

I was hoping that maybe some of the Marietta- turned Columbus Delts could possibly work something out where we could every now and then and grab a dinner together, do a cocktail night, play some poker and whatnot. I know we'd definitely like to meet some of guys who helped make our collegiate experiences as good as they were.

Peace UP, A-Town Down.
John M. Kitson, III

I know that there are a lot of Marietta Delts in Columbus, maybe you guys can make something work. Lets see, there is JP Clowes, Ted Smith, and Hartsy that I know of. Good luck.

Tim Parsons sent me the following. He is starting out in his own business, if you are interested, give him a call. Good luck Tim, Glad you are coming back for the 40th. See you then.

Hello Rick,
I wanted everyone to know that I have joined the ranks of Arbonne International as Independent Consultant. Arbonne International is a 28 year old network marketing company that got its start in skin care and has since expanded to represent a well-rounded health and wellness line.

I am looking for clients, consultants and business builders to join me. I believe this works for four main reasons:

the products really work, each monthly check gets bigger and bigger,
clients keep coming back for more and Arbonne has a tremendous catalog of professional development curriculum (i.e. Arbonne University).

Could you please pass this along to the rest of the alumni? I would love to get some samples out to the guys and their wives. Believe me, the wives will love it as well. My wife has almost the entire catalog. In the meantime, if people are interested in learning more about the company please go to www.arbonne.com.

Thank you very much Rick.

Hope to see you all at the 40th. In health and wellness,

Tim Parsons Your Arbonne Independent Consultant

I got the following correction from Patty (Ritchie) Hoppa, it seems that I gave the wrong address for her in the last email. Please make the correction.

Rick,
Thanks for the update - I know what you mean about time getting away from you! Wanted to let you know that in the message my address was wrong - it's **removed for privacy reasons**. I'll try to get more on top of things now that school is finally out.
Take care,
Patty

By the way, Hops has set up a special section in the email list for our Little Sisters. Check it out and help us fill in the blanks!

Chris Lieb sent the following email address correction. Thanks Chris and I'll see you in October.

I'm Chris Lieb - just graduated. My new email is **removed**. Thanks, I look
forward to the 40th

Along the same line, the chapter website got the following note and new address. If you know Mike, drop him a line and say "hello"

I hope that you can make it to the 40th Mike, we seem to be a bit light in the decade of the 80's. Here is his address: **removed**
I saw on your blog that one James Mason was looking to get in touch with certain 80s Delts. I would like to know the whereabouts of Adam Pyles, Osler, Mason, Cruse, MB and Marlene, Marphy, Chuck, etc. as well.

This is Mike Malone 85, and wondering if anyone is going to make it to homecoming. If anyone knows how to get in touch with these folks, i would appreciate it.

Nice website by the way, you guys must be much more motivated than we
were.

Anyway, good to see some info on old Marietta and of course the Delt house.

Those were the best days of my life.
Mike Malone, class of 1985.

Tracey Howard sent in the following RSVP for the 40th. If you know them and haven't seen them in a while, make plans to reconnect. Time is getting short.

At this time I am planning to attend the Homecoming program in October.

I am bringing one guest, Heather Zoller-Gritz, who is a Marietta Alum of '91, and who was good friends with many of the late 80's and early 90's Delts.

So please accept this RSVP for 2.Tracey Howard, '91 Heather Zoller-Gritz, '91

There have been a few questions about the cost for the weekend, and it is $50 per person. So if you are bringing someone with you, the cost will be $100 for the both of you. Please let us know that you are coming, so we can make the reservations for the banquet and know how many will be here for the riverboat ride. This is important for our planning purposes.

Ken Kavula, I sent you a copy of the picture from the last email, did you manage to help Dave Broome out with nameing people for him? If you didn't get it, let me know and I'll try again.

The speakers that we have lined up for the banquet so far are: Ken Kavula, Greg Maloof, Rich Wolf, Shawn Selby, Brian Rothenberg, Don Wolfe, Jordan Herrick, and Chris Goebel. If you don't see your era listed from those speakers, we are interested in what you have to say. Let me know if you want to speak, and I'll send you the ground rules.

Below is the Itenerary for the weekend and the list of those who have let us know they are coming. That's all I have for now, have a great week.

Hello everyone,

For only the 2nd time I'm including some of our Little Sisters in this email, welcome ladies. I hope that you can find some of your lost friends as a result of these emails. We are still missing most of them, so if you are in contact with anyone, either brother or sister, pelase ask them to get in touch with me so I can add them to the mailing list.

Well, summer is here, and the college has emptied of students again. Good news on the grades front for our Delts, they finished the spring semester with a 3.05 GPA. That's a great accomplishment for them.

Because Ferg was on vacation, I got to do the final walkthrough of the house with the college so the chapter wouldn't be hit with any fines for not taking care of the place. Aside from a couple of holes in the walls that needed patched, they came through with flying colors. It shows that guys can indeed clean up after themselves (except for Hops, who had to have his parents come to town to help him - wonder why that was?) I'm just joking there, I had the chance to meet his parents and enjoyed my conversation with them.

On the college front, they are making pretty good progress on the library and have broken ground for the planetarium. That is the project that really excites me, I just love the sky shows that those things put on. It is supposed to be avialiable to the public as well as being used for the college community.

I don't have a lot of news for you this time, because nobody sent me any. That's probably my fault since it has been so long since I wrote anything. Please guys, send me some news to share.

Some good news, at least I think so, Joe Mester sent me several of the old emails that are missing from our Blog, and I found a couple more while I was cleaning out an old email box of mine. So I"ll be getting them added when I get a couple of minutes and have some motivation. It's hard to get both things at the same time. It's funny, I moved back to "slow, sleepy Marietta" and have less time to do things than I did in the big city of Tucson. Wonder why that is?

Karnea is coming soon, it's only a couple months away. If you have had a change of mind at the last minute, and would like to go to part of it, get in touch with Fergie. Remember it is in Pittsburgh this year, so it won't get much closer to Marietta, it is fraternity's 150 anniversary. There will be a side trip to Bethany, for those interested.

The big news, of course, is that our own celebration, #40 is only 4 months away. That's right, after all these emails we now are just 4 months from the 40th anniversary of DTD on the Marietta campus.

We have heard from several people about thier plans to come to town, I hope that the rest of you are making your arrangements also. I read at the college alumni site at www.marietta.edu that Beth (Thompson) Miller, one of our little sisters and the wife of BAM is in the process of putting together a reunion of the AST's at homecoming this year. If you know an AST let them know please so they can get in touch with Beth. You can reach her through BAM at **Removed for privacy reasons** Good luck Beth, hope you have a great turnout.

This is the note that Patty (Ritchie) Hoppa sent me when I got in touch with her.

Hi Rick!
Yes, this is the former Patty Ritchie. How are you? What are you doing? I am a first grade teacher here in Baltimore. I am married and have two kids - the oldest is completing his doctorate at Oxford University (England) doing research on diabetes as a neuroscientist, and the younger will start her masters/doctorate at Univ of CA, Santa Barbara as an anthropologist. Do you still play bridge??
Take care, Patty

From Sharon (Czajkowski) Dinunzi I got this note:

Hey Rick,
Wow, what a surprize to hear from you!! Yes, I was a little sister of DTD. I am glad that you reached out ... I always scan the MC newsletter for updates on the Delts I went to school with. I defintely remember you (I graduated in 1976) and a lot of the guys from the Delt house. I'll defintely check out the DTD website and blog. Your email brought a smile to my face and good memories. Thanks.
Best regards,Sharon (Czajkowski) Dinunzi

And Barbara Chandler sent this note to me:

Hi Rick,
I would love to be a part of the festivities. Please keep me informed.
Barbara

It was a real treat for me to hear from them, hopefully as we go forward, I'll get the rest of them added to the list.

Justin Rosenberg sent me the following address change, please make note of it. **removed** And here are the little sisters addresses. Patty (Ritchie) Hoppa, Sharon (Czajkowski) Dinunzi, and Barbara Chandler **removed**

We have several Delt speakers lined up for our Banquet, but still have room for a few more, should you wish to share your experiences as a Delt. The requirements are pretty simple; your talk can be whatever you choose so long as it pertains to DTD at MC (bear in mind, this will be a mixed group of people) and it needs to be kept to 10 minutes or so. We will have a computer with power point availiable if you wish. We also need more pictures or other memorabelia to share during the weekend. The speakers we have so far are: Ken Kavula, Greg Maloof, Rich Wolf, Shawn Selby, Brian Rothenberg, Don Wolfe, Jordon Herrick, and Chris Goebel. Let me know if you would like to join them.

David Broome asked me to include the following link because it has a picture that he needs help with. It is of our initiation banquet, and he needs names to go with the faces. I hope I did that right... Below are the names of the people that will be attending the 40th, please let me know of your plans, so we can make our arrangements to take care of everyone. You can find our iterary at the Delt website www.marietta.edu/~delts The cost is $50.00 per person, please make your checks payable to "Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc." and send it to Bob Ferguson, **removed**. Please do not send the 40th payment to the college when you are making your reservations with them for homecoming, send it to Bob. Thank you. The college will be sending information about the college activities and costs to you shortly.

That's all I have for you this time, hopefully I won't be so long next time. Have a great week! Rick Neel '73

Good morning Delts,

I hope that all of you remembered that today is Mother's Day, but if you forgot, there is still time.

Let's see what's been happening in the world of EY. We had our golf outing on April 26th and the attendence wasn't all that great, which is kind of what we expected with the 40th coming up this fall. We had 2 alums (Hartsy and myself), 2 undergrads (Hops and Nick Aylward), and 2 guests. So we split up into 2 groups for our round. Hartsy and Nick in one group and Hops and me in the other. Hops tried valiently to keep our group in the hunt, but unfortunately his handicap (me) was too much for him to overcome so we lost. But it was a great day, the sun was shining and it was warm so we all enjoyed ourselves. Next year the golf weekend will be the same time as this year, the last weekend in April. Hope to see you all out playing then.

Next weekend marks the end of another school year. The college commencement (the 171st) will be on May 17th. That is when the newest members of EY's alumni association will officially be welcomed. So for now, let me just offer my congratulations to the new graduates to be. Good luck in your future, may it be all you hope and dream it will be.

Sunday May 4th marked the newest renewal of a time honored EY tradition; Ferg Fest '08. About 34 brothers and friends attended the annual wrap up of the college year and final break before finals week. As usual everyone had a great afternoon. I was invited, but unfortunately I had to miss due to having to work. I think it might be fun to see if there are any good stories to be shared about Ferg Fests of the past. If you have anything to share, send me a note and I'll share it with everyone. To all of the undergrads, have a great summer. We'll see you in the fall.

The undergraduates have published a new issue of the Protimoi. Check it out at the chapter web site - http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ Nice job, as usual.

Let's see the notes and news that I have gotten since the last email. Two teaser bits (to make you go read the Protimoi) Hunter Jonsson announced his engagement and the undergraduates won the newly reintroduced BattleAx.

James Mason sent the following challenge;

I've got a challenge for Todd Spence. Get more of your pledge trainees to attend than your pledge class. I know he trained the fine pledge class of 1980. I'd be interested in where Tom McVey is also and Bruce "West, by God, smile when you say it, Virginia" Goldfarb and Bill Cruse. James

How about it Todd? Care to try? I asked James if he was going to be able to be here, and here is his response:

Rick: I am considering it and have been in contact with a few of the 1980s brothers (Dean Didato, Steve Bennett and Adam Pyles), but cannot commit at this point. Todd is one of the guys that came to mind early on after receiving your first emails. I think everyone's pledge trainer makes a significant impact on their fraternity and college lives. I'm glad to hear he's out there and will keep up with the 1980's guys to try and drum up some attendees. James

I agree with you James, the pledge trainer is probably the one person who either starts a new member out on the right path, or who doesn't. I think that we have been pretty fortunate over the years in having pretty strong pledge trainers.

Joe Kirby sent me the following note. I heard from Bob Exten a day or so ago, Joe. He's coming. How about the rest of you, have you contacted any of your long missing friends and brothers and made plans to get back together? Our 40th anniversary would be a perfect time.

Rick, I will be traveling back in space time to attend the 40th reunion. Please reserve 2 spots at the reception dinner. I told DeVito and Exten I wouldn't make the trip back unless they showed - John committed, X10 said he was coming, We'll see. Good work on getting Roger Coffman's email - I sent him an email -
haven't heard anything. I guess we'll see on that one too.

Here is the note I got from Bob Exten, so there will be at least one group of "3 Amigos" in attendance.

Rick-Please add me and my wife to the list of attendees. Could you also please send me Bob Ferguson's address,or do i send the check to the House?
Thanks-Bob Exten.

For any others who needs Fergies address, it is: Bob Ferguson, **removed for privacy reasons** The cost for the weekend is $50 per person. Please make the check payable to: Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc.

Matt Dole sent me the following note, unfortunately we missed making connections while he was in town, sorry Matt. But he did point out something that I need to correct, and perhaps some others do also. When you change your email address, please send me a short note so I can correct it in my files and the chapter can make the correction also. Thanks in advance for that!

Hey Rick - I'm going to be in Marietta tonight and tomorrow. I'm not going to play golf because, well I suck. But I also have a lot of folks to visit since I'm just a visitor now. Anyway, I'd love to get dinner Saturday night if there's a group that's going to go after the outing.Who's coming in that you've heard from? My cell is**removed**. Let me know what's going on post golf outing and I'll try to catch up with you guys. By the way, the Delt email list on the website still has your comcast address... I sent this email there first and had to track down your email from one of the updates rather than the email list. Thanks,Matt Dole

Speaking of address corrections, I got this one from Ashley Woolam; **removed** That's about all I have for this time.

Here are some brothers that still remain amoug the missing. Any help you can give me is very much appreciated. Steve Newton '66, Joe Baker '67, Joseph Farrell '68, Joseph Cohn '69, Tom Lindvall '71, Doug Shaffer '71, Gordon Turner '71, Mark Ewald '72, Peter Grob '72, John Alligood '73, Paul Craft '73, Lawrence Brown '74, Scott Elger '74, Eric Gough '74, Mark Russell ' 74, William Snyder '74, Rodney Stoltz '76, Richard Hruska '77, Gregory McComas '77, David Mogill '77, Gregory Carriera '78, Peter Denio '78, Steven Dennis '78, and Scott Gilmore '79. I also need the addresses of our Little Sisters, the only one that I have so far is Marianne Paul.

The following is the list of people that have committed to coming for the 40th. When your plans firm up, please let us know so we can be sure to have enough dinners for the banquet and the river cruise.

Monday, April 14, 2008

Good afternoon everyone,

Well today is just a beautiful day here in Marietta. Makes me remember why I moved back here in the first place. Also made me get off of my butt and make the reservations with the golf club for our Annual Delt Golf Tournament.

Our golf day will be April 26th. That is the last Saturday in April. Make your plans to be here. Let me know if you will be here, please. I need to keep the golf course updated as to the number of us that will be playing. We have reservations at the Golf Club of West Virginia in Waverly. It is about a 15 minute drive from the fraternity house. Our tee times begin at 10:30 am. The cost will be $35.00 per person, and that is for 18 holes and a cart. As usual, we will be playing a best ball fromat. The green fees will be between $28 and $33 per round with the rest of the $35 going to the House Corp. Are you going to be here Hartsy??? I haven't heard from you for quite a while now.

As most of you remember, last year we had a fundraising program to replace the ritual equipment for the chapter. Last Sunday, I attended an activation of the spring pledge class (5 men), it was the first formal meeting that I have attended since we built the new equipment. It looks really nice, the undergrads did one heck of a job putting it all together. We still need some more equipment, but what we have now is nice. Add the new equipment with the new robes that the College purchased for us and the hard work that the ritual team put into the ceremony and it was very impressive. Thank you to all that donated to the project.

I mentioned last time that I had been in contact with the college in an attempt to secure the email addresses for some of our missing brothers. The alumni office found several men for us.

Here they are, if you know any of them, please drop them a line and say Hi. Roger Coffman, William Costello, Dave Caldwell, Jim Bailey, Duane Stokes, Brian Clark, Jimmy Long, Adam Mermer, and Brent Blackburn **addresses removed for privacy reasons** This gives us the addresses of over 285, spectacular I think.

Since the last time I wrote, I made an attempt to contact our Little Sisters. I only have the names from the composites to go by and I wrote to the ones I could get addresses from. The only person who wrote back is Marianne (Paul) Mahoney, her address is **removed** . Welcome back to DTD Marianne. I am looking for the email addresses of the rest of them. If you are in contact with any of the girls, please send me an address. Here are the names that I have, Dona Jenkins, Beth Thompson (I have her address since she is married to BAM), Tina Chapin, Patty Ritchie, Lelia Woods, Ellen Schreiber, Denise Rizzolo (she married Joe Pitrone one of our pledges), Sharon Czajkowski, Wendy Binder, Deborah Smith, Barbara Foster, Kathy Strauss, and Karlene Betts. There may be others who never made the composite and girls that should be included in the group even if we had disbanded the Little Sister Program. If you are aware of anyone who I should be inclulding, please let me know.

Marianne sent me this note when she contacted me:

Hi Rick,
Hope all has been going well for all former and current DTD's. Am currently
living in central VA. Have one son at home in his last year of high school and
one in his freshman year of college. Am semi-retired and enjoying life but keep
very busy with the yard and home when not working in one of the labs over at
UVA. It would be interesting to learn what other DTD's and Little Sisters have
been doing.All for now.Marianne (Paul) Mahoney '75

Michael Tita sent the following, I guess that treasurers are the same no matter the era. Glad you are coming back Michael.

Hi Rick,
Just wanted to RSVP that my wife and I will be attending Home Coming this
year. Thanks for all your work on this. Also, tell Fergie hi for me. He may remember me as the treasurer that helped bring the Chapter from persistent red into the black. Yes, I was (am?) a S.O.B. :-)
Michael

Bob Peterson sent the following note to Fergie and a copy to me. If you are planning on going to Karnea and want to let the rest of us know, drop me a line. As close as we are to Pittsburgh, there is the offer for us to have a reception for the chapter. If interested, let me know and we'll se what we can set up.

Hi Bob,
Some weeks ago I think you sent me an e-mail about the Karnea. Since January I have been to Budapest, two trips to Tokyo, two trips toBrussels & Paris and one trip to Boston & NYC. So somewhere during all this traveling I lost track of the communication. I am now in Rome and getting ready to go to Brussels, Boston, LA and then to Tokyo again all in next 3-4weeks.I am planning to attend the Karnea as part of the EU undergraduate and alumni delegation in August. Please let me know how to register and I would like to know who or how many are planning to come from EU so we can all congregate as a united force. I have been in contact with Norval Stephens by e-mail lately and looking forward to seeing him there too. FYI, my wife and I are in the process of selling our home and property in Roma and will be out of here hopefully by the summer. I am renovating our family home near Boston on Lake Wickaboag and converting it from a summer home to proper year round residence. Most likely I will be moving back to Tokyo with my wife and re-establishing residency there again from January 2009 as most of my business activities are shifting to Asia. I will then shuttle back and forth between Japan and my Lake Wickaboag house during the year.Still on track to by at EU 40th.

Fraternally,Bob

PS: Rick, welcome back to Marietta and great job on the alumni
communications!

Steve Pouliot sent me the following note. It shows that some of us are in contact with others that we don't even realize are amoung the missing. If this applies to you, contact that brother and get him involved. Thanks.

Rick:
didn't know buzzy was among the missing. I knew where he was hiding all
along.

Steve Pouliot

Todd Spence sent the following challenge. Now, I'm not sure how you can issue a challenge when you haven't committed yourself, but here it is. I have a challenge for you Todd, join us in October. It'll be fun.

OK where is all the 1980's people?

I want to put forth the challenge (I am not committing to going yet) I want
all my pledge class to atend the event there were 9 of us. Where are all of you?

Plus where is Jim Berry, Jim Blumenfeld... and Tom Mcvey?????

Todd Spence Grad 1981

What a long stange trip its been...... Good to hear that Al Head is
stil alive and kickin....

Joshua Downey sent the following note, not for the first time. I had dropped the ball. Sorry about that.

Hey Rick,

Joshua Downey here, '07. I think I sent something to Jordan Herrick, but
maybe something got lost in translation. Sign me up for the 40th!!

Joshua Downey

Doug Orr sent me the following note. It raises and good point. Please send the $50 to:Bob Ferguson. Make it payable to the Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc. The sooner you send it the better because we earn interest on the money! Rick the fundraiser, that's me!

Rick,
I will be attending the homecoming in October and I will be bringing 1 person with me. I was also wondering when we needed to have the $50 in? As I work with Ferg it will not be hard for me to get it to him but I just wondered when it needed to be in by? Let me know and great job with the e-mails.

Thanks, Doug Orr

Charley Maghes sent in this note, and then he followed it up with another. A friend of the Delts will be coming with him.

Rick and Jordan,

Just wanted to let you know that I am planning on attending Homecoming and
the 40th celebration. I will be coming alone so I only need one ticket. Please let me know who and where to send my money.

Thanks! Charley

Rick & Jordan,
I'd like to add an additional person to my reservation. A college friend of mine (Charla Nutter) was close to several of the EU Delts of my era and I invited her to attend with me (since my wife is staying in Columbus with our three kids). I'll forward the check for both to Fergie within the next week.

Thanks! Charley

Hops sent me this bit of bad news, my condolences go to Paul's family.

Hey Rick,

I received a note from Paul Schoenfeld's mother that he passed away following an emergency surgery in August of 2005. I had sent the save-the-date card to their address, because it was the only one I had. This is a very unfortunate update that I thought we may get from sending those postcards.

She goes on to say that his wife and children remain in New Jersey, where
Paul was in business.

Hops

Joe Mester has offered to send me the emails that we are missing from the blog, so when he gets them to me, we will have a complete set over there. Check it out as needed, and if you have something to add, please feel free. http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/ Remember, we are still looking for your stories from your times as a Delt. Dave Broome and I are going to be sitting down with them at the golf outing. Please join us at that time Frank (thought I had forgotten about you didn't you????) Marianne (and the rest of you), please check it out. I think it is kind of interesting (I should - I wrote most of it. LOL) If you need any addresses of missing brothers, the chapter website http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ can give you the information. You will need a password to access it **removed, if you need it please contact the chapter**

Let's see what is going on with the undergrads. They have gotten thier grades for the last semester. And congratulations are due to them. The chapter got a 3.0. That's great news. Hopefully they can make it 2 in a row. For Northern Division awards (from the Rainbow) EY got the following: Outstanding Alumni Service - Robert Ferguson (Fergie), Outstanding Alumni Newsletter - thanks to the Protimoi (a new one is scheduled to be published soon), above AMA/AFA grade point average, Adopt a School (the fraternity philanthropy project). and finally, the chapter was awarded membership in the Court of Honor, one step shy of the Hugh Shields Award. That means that EY is one of the Top 20 chapters in the whole Fraternity. That is a wonderful year guys, keep up the good work.

Here are the brothers that have committed to attend our 40th Anniversary at homecoming October 24 -26. I hope that you will join us. The cost is $50 per person, and you can get the schedule of events at the blogspot. There is a possibility that the college will try to collect the fee for us. If they ask you, please decline and send the money to Fergie. That way we will have a better idea of how many are coming. That's all I have for this week.

Have a great week and let me know if you are coming and how many will be in your party.

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Good morning to everyone,

I have a confession to make. In order to try to find more of our missing brothers, I went to the Alumni Office at the college the other day. I spoke to Hub Burton, who is the VP of Alumni Relations. He is a Delt (from the UofA - where I used to live) and I shared our email list with him. If anyone does not want the college to have your email address, please let me know and I'll get him to remove it from the college database.

I did, so far, get the addresses of 3 of our brothers that I didn't have. So it is a good thing in one way. The new brothers that are found are: Peter Noll , Bill Buzzell, and Todd Myers **removed for privacy reasons**. Welcome home guys.

Let me take a minute to get you up to speed as to what this email is for. Originally it was to encourage attendence at the chapters 40th Anniversary on the Marietta Campus. By the way that will be at homecoming this fall, October 24-26. I hope that you will be able to join us for the festivities. I will list below the names of the brothers who have let me know of thier intentions to be here in Marietta.

The email, over time has kind of taken on a life of its own, thanks to the efforts of several brothers. Almost every edition has notes from alums about what is going on with them. Also, from our email directory several brothers have gotten in touch with friends that they haven't talked to in years. You can access the directory at the chapter website www.marietta.edu/~delts the password is: **removed, if you need it please contact Rick Neel or the chapter** Please take advantage of it to contact some brothers you have lost contact with over the years. Also, if you are in contact with anyone that we don't have listed, let me know.

We also have a Blog - http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com where we have collected almost all of the emails, as well as messages from some other delt alums. Again, welcome back to EY, I hope to see you at homecoming.

Time is getting closer for our annual Alumni golf outing. It will be held the 4th weekend in April, that is the 26th. Dave Broome is coming in and we are planning on sitting down and going over some of the material he has collected for our 40th anniversary booklet. Anyone interested is welcome to sit in with us and throw in your 2cents worth. And if you have any memorabelia to share, bring it with you.

Steve Fox sent me the following note:

Hey Rick,
Steve Fox here (71). I will be unable to attend the reunion in October. My wife is retiring and we are going to Hawaii the for two weeks starting the 25th of October. Maybe I will make the next one. Enjoy your updates. Keep up the good work.
Steve

I just don't understand Steve, what possibly could Hawaii offer in October that Marietta doesn't? Just kidding, congratulations to your wife, may she have a very happy retirement. See you next time.

Neal Mettler sends the following;

Rick At this point in time I think I will be able to make it. Several of my daughters are planning on attending also.

How many daughters are you bringing Neal? Do we need to lock up the undergrads? Smitty Smith sent me the following note:

Rick,
I'm glad that I have been comfirmed for the 40th, but I have a few questions...!st to what address and to whom do we write the check to for the $50/person payment? And if we have pics from back in the day, would anyone want them to digitize and add to a slide show or the booklet? The reason I ask is cause I got some. Let me know.
your friendly neighborhood Smitty '00

I think I answered you Smitty, but if not, here goes. You can mail your check payable to Crescent Colony of Marietta, Inc. to Bob Ferguson at **removed**. Note on the check that it is for homecoming 08. You can mail your slides to me at **removed** and I'll see that they get to Dave Broome. Thanks for the slides, those are like gold to us.

From Greg Maloof I got this note and new address;

Rick,
As usual an excellent job !! Moving is a big pain for me; computer challenges are worse; and you seem to conquer both. Bruce Miller never ceases to amaze me. He had another great idea. Pam & I will be attending. Also, new e mail: **removed**. Thanks for all you do.
Greg

I have to agree with the statement about BAM. He seems to do that alot.

I have a commitment from Randy (AWK) Williams to lead the memorial service for our departed brothers at the banquet. He is an excellent ritualist and I'm sure he'll do a good job for us. This will be an opportunity for you to share a thought about one of our departed brothers. Let me relist the schedule of events for the 40th for those of you who may have missed it the last time.

Good morning Delts!

Let's see what is new and exciting on the DTD front. First of all, there is only about a month and 1/2 until the 2008 golf outing. It will be held the 4th weekend in April. That is the 26th. I hope that we have a good turnout for the day and that the weather cooperates with us. That also is DooDah day for the college, so it is a big weekend for the undergrads also. Make your plans to play.

Also, we are only 7+ months away from our 40th anniversary. I hope that everyone is making plans to come back to Marietta for that occasion. October 24-26th are the dates. I have been lining up speakers for our banquet, hopefully by the time I get done, I will have someone from every decade of our history. If you are interested, please contact me or Hops at the house. So far I have commitments from: Ken Kavula, Greg Maloof, Rich Wolf, Shawn Selby, Brian Rothenberg, Don Wolfe, Jordon Herrick, and Adam Hopkins. That covers the late 60's, early/mid 70's, mid/late 80's, early 90's, early/mid 00's, and the undergrads. So you see that we are still missing a few time periods.

The guidelines for a presentation, are about a 10 minute talk, covering anything you wish to talk about, covering your time period as a Delt at Marietta. We will have a computer availiable for a power point presentation, if you are interested in using that.

The undergrads have pledged an additional man this spring, his name is Brendon George. Congratulations Brendon and welcome. He gives the chapter 5 pledges for the spring.

Working with Ashley Woolam, we have found a public ceremony for our Brothers that have gone to the Chapter Eternal, and we are planning on having that at our banquet at the 40th. If you have a thought that you would like to share concerning one of our departed brothers, this will be an opportunity for you to do so.

Speaking of the banquet, and the rest of the weekend, we are planning on holding the cost to $50/person. That is for both the cruise and the banquet. We are asking for you to let us know that you are planning on coming so we can make arrangements for the # of seats we will need for the banquet. Also, the price for the cruise is dependent on the # of people that go. Please drop me or Jordon Stryker, the new chapter corresponding secretary, a note, just telling me what you will be attending and how many will be in your party. Jordan can be reached at jns001@marietta.edu, or at delts@marietta.edu That is important, for planning reasons.

Speaking of Jordon Stryker, he has recently posted the most recent issue of the Protimoi. It can be found at the chapter website, http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ When I spoke to him at the last chapter meeting, he told me his goal was to publish 2 of them a semester. Check it out and let him know what you think.

I mailed this past week a box of pictures and articles from our history to Dave Broome, who has volenteered to put a booklet together for us. We are still looking for more material, but time is getting a bit short. Please send any stories or other stuff to me or Dave. Thanks.

I received the following note from Bruce Miller the other day, and I think it is a great idea.

Rick- How about listing everyone who's coming to the reunion so far? List
them by class & keep it updated and that may encourage more brothers to
attend. It could be at the end of each of your emails or listed on the
chapter site. Keep up the incredible work!~BAM

Unfortunately, for whatever reason (I moved recently and have misplaced many things, so I'll lay the blame there) I don't have the names of everyone who has let me know they are going to be there. I'll list those names I have, and as I hear from more people I'll keep it updated. Hopefully we can get it listed at the chapter website also. Here goes...

1960's - Greg Maloof, Ken Kavula, Frank Hirsch (I think)

1970's - Ted Smith, Lance Koved, Don Wolfe, Ron Rees, Bruce Miller, Bruce Masatsugu, Darrell Pritchard, Joe Matheny, Keith Zak (I think), Randy Williams, Rich Wolf, Bob Peterson, Al Head, Bob Kavula, Rick Dunsker, Peter Weiner, Chuck Robinson, Bob Burns, Rick Neel

1980's - Drew Kern, Jon Hartshorn, Brian Rothenberg

1990's - Shawn Selby, J.P. Clowes, Matt Christman-Lees, Tim Cox (I think)

2000's - Craig Sundstrom, Andy Byers, Justin Nethers, Matt Dole, Corey Medina, Casey Trail, Chris "Smitty" Smith, Seth Wolfson, Trent Elliott, Jordon Herrick

I'm sure that I have left several names out, if I left you off, I'm sorry. Please drop me a line and let me know...For the rest of you, make your plans now to hook up with your friends that you haven't seen in a long time.

Here are some new addresses that I've received in the last month or so. Welcome back to EY guys, hope to see you in October. Brendon George '12, Jeffrey Myers '81, Dennis McNaboe '94, Dave Faunce '94, and an updated address, Craig Sundstrom '07. **addresses removed for privacy reasons**

Here is some brothers that I don't have any contact information for. If you are in touch with them, let them know we are looking for them. Steve Newton '66, Joe Baker '67, Joe Farrell '68, William Warner '68, Roger Coffman '69, Joseph Cohn '69, Paul Schoenfeld '70, Thomas Lindvall '71, Doug Schaffer '71, Gordon Turner '71, Mark Ewald '72, Peter Grob '72, John Alligood '73, Paul Craft '73, Larry Brown '74, Scott Elger '74, Ric Gough '74, Mark Russell '74, Bill Snyder '74, G. Saturday, February 23, 2008

Hi everybody,
I guess that I'm waiting too long to write these things. I caught heck for it again the other day. I'll try to do better. So let's get on with it and see what is happening.

Some good news has come from the undergraduates lately. They received word that they have made the Court of Honor for 2007. That is a prettty high honor, just short of a Hugh Shields. I'm very proud of them, and send my congratulations to the chapter.

Also, the chapter just completed it's spring rush. They got 4 new pledges and had the pledging ceremony last Sunday. The new members are; Tim Crandall, Josh Derry, Derek Ensinger, and Dave Hood. Welcome guys to the chapter.

The first meeting of the west coast branch of the EYDTD alumni council was held on Feb 12, 2008. It was held in Tucson Arizona at the Tucson National Golf course. And while I haven't yet gotten my copy of the minutes of the meeting, I have been informed that the temp. was about 70 and the day was exceptional. The Delts in attendence were Bruce Masatsugu, Jim Neel, and Darrell Pritchard. I have to tell you guys that I'm envious, it was snowing here on Tuesday. Also, I have been told that Bruce has made reservations at the Lafeytte Hotel for our 40th, hopefully he will have his wife with him. Darrell told me that he has convinced his wife, Lori to come to Marietta for the weekend. How about you, Jim. Did the golf outing convince you that it will be a fun weekend? I hope so.

I got the following message from Bob Burns, he is planning on bringing the next Delt Legacy to campus for a visit this summer. Give me a shout Bob, I'd love to get to see you, perhaps have dinner.

Rick,
I just had lunch with Angel Anderson, Assistant Advancement for
MC. When she asked when would be the next time I might be on campus, I
mentioned maybe this Summer on a campus tour with my longer son and then maybe this Fall for the 40th Anniversary of MC's DTD. I mentioned that you
had taken the led in organizing (or at least coordinating) the event. She
mentioned that she might be able to help you and others find extra hotel rooms
if there is a late heavy turnout of members. I expect that she call you offering her assistance if it is needed.

Bob "Alki" Burns '75

So as you see, if you are having trouble finding affordable rooms, give me a shout and I will go check with Angel and see what we can do to help. I really don't mind, so don't feel that you are being a bother.

From Rich Miller I got the next note. He is referring to Zak Gay qualifing for the Nationals in the high jump. And I have to say, he is correct. It never would have happened in our day.

Hey Rick,
Where the Hell did we get all these track and field medalists??? They never would have been seen while you and I were at 507! This is Great! Don't know if I'll be able to get there yet, but through your efforts, Mettler and I have touched based for the first time in over 30 years. That means a lot.

Hope to see you in October, Rich

Again, like the last email, I can take credit for 2 old friends reconnecting. I think that is so exciting, we all spend a long time at Marietta and make friends that last a lifetime, to have this email listing help friends reconnect is something that I truely enjoy. If you have a story of someone you got back in touch with as a result of this, please share it with us. You can access the email address list at the chapter website; http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/. The password is; **removed**. Please take advantage of it. It is there for you.

Here is an official notification of attendance at the 40th: Ted Smith writes;

Rick… Although I have inferred that I will be at the 40th...in reality, my
wife and I WILL be there! Also, please include Murray Talasnik on any e-mails to brothers re: THE EVENT. I see Mike Stein was included on the latest.

Thanks! Ted

Not to worry, Ted. If I have an email address I send these emails to them. I have found that in order to avoid "spam filters" I have to keep my groups under 100 addresses. So I send these out three times so I reach everybody.

Ferg sent the following note to Bruce Miller. I feel that it is a great honor, I had the opportunity to do it a couple of years ago, and was really touched. Shawn Selby did it before I did, and had to pull off of the road on his way home because he was so touched to have had the privliedge. I know that Ferg has asked other Alumni to participate, and all of us have felt honored and very moved.

Good Morning Bruce,
As we begin to tie up loose ends for the 40th, I have a request for you. Would you like to do the charge for the initiation at the 40th ? I think it would be very meaningful to the whole group of brothers. This will be done on Sunday morning.

Bruce has accepted the invitation. So for all of you who were Undergrads during Bruce's time as Chapter Advisor or while he was an undergrad, he will be in Marietta for the 40th. Be sure to join us.

If you are planning on being in Marietta, and are interested in being a part of an initiation, please contact Ferg. You won't regret it.

I have gotten so carried away with the 40th that I have not mentioned the Annual Golf Outing. It is normally held the 4th Saturday in April. That would be the 26th. Make your plans now to attend this annual event. We will play a round of golf and have a House Corp meeting.

I'll try to get my stuff together so we can have a hamburger cookout at my house. (I'll have to replace my grill, since I left it in Arizona, so if you will be here and have a desire to grill some burgers, let me know.)

One last thing, Don't forget to send in your stories about your years at MC. We have several, but need more, and the time is getting short.

That's all I have today. Have a great weekend. Rick Neel '73

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Hello everyone,

Well my vacation is about to end. I have to report to work on Monday, that is kind of too bad, I could easily get used to this "no work" thing. But the bills still have to be paid. So I'm back at it starting tomorrow.

Let's see what is happening in Delt land. First, I think that I need to remind you that there is only 10 days left for the rooms that are being held for us at the Best Western here in Marietta. The phone number is: 740-374-7211. We have 20 rooms being held for us, and the cost is about $75 per night. If you want to do a little leg work yourself, you can probably find a better price online. For other hotels in the area, check the chapter website and click on the link in the 40th anniversary section. That is in the middle top of the front page. Here is the link to the website: http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ Time is getting short, there are only 278 days to go. We have put together a bit more inclusive schedule for the weekend. It is still tentative but this is where we are so far:

Thursday evening for early arrivals

Meet and greet-Town House around 8:00

Friday

The day will be free to see Marietta

Noon - Midnight Registration at DTD

8-10 pm Valley Gem river cruise-Bottom deck enclosed

Saturday

9:00-9:25 Doughnuts and beverage at Delt House

9:30-10:15 Campus tours

10:30-11:00 507 Putnam visit

11:30-12:00 Parade

12:00-12:45 House Corp meeting

12:45-1:30 Tailgate at Stadium

1:30-4:30 Football game

6:00-7:00 Social Hour @ Shrine Club

7:00-12:00 Dinner, Program & Socialization (um, I think we mean Socializing. Socialization is the process of converting private property to state-owned property -- Shawn)

Sunday

9:00-10:00 Breakfast at Delt house

10:00-11:00 Ritual not at house

11:00-1:00 Alumni-Undergrad Football game

1:00- Free time

You will notice that we have a tour of 507 Putnam scheduled, that is assuming we can make arrangements with the owners. Also, there is a tour of the campus listed. For those of you that haven't been back to Marietta in a while, the campus has changed quite a bit. There has been a lot of new construction, with more scheduled for the next couple of years.

I have had several people ask me about cost. The plan is for the weekend to cost no more than $50 per person. That will not include the cost of lodging or what ever the college will charge for its functions. There will be a cash bar at the Shrine Club and on the Valley Gem. We felt that there was no way we could afford to have an open bar at any of these functions, not only because some of the brothers may not drink, but also, we are talking about a FRATERNITY here. My goodness there isn't that much money in the world.

We have commiments from 4 brothers so far to be speakers at the dinner Saturday night. Greg Maloof, Ken Kavula, Rich Wolf and Adam Hopkins. We are still looking for speakers from the other eras of EY. If you feel comfortable speaking, drop me a line so we can save time for you. We are looking for a 10 minute limit. Ken has already committed to a power point presentation, so the computer will be there if anyone else wants to go that route.

We are also hoping for some representation from the International headquarters. I have had a commitment from Jim Russell, so hopefully he will be with us.

Now on to the letters that I've gotten from you guys this week.

Mark Schlicker sent this note. I hope all is well with your wife, Mark, but for sure she comes first. It does show that people are contacting others, I hope that the rest of you are talking the 40th up. See you all there.

Just got a Letter from BAM asking about homecoming. It s
really up in the air with the wife's back problems. Hope to get you the slides I
promised.

Best Regards,

MARK SCHICKLER '69

Trent Elliott sent me this note, but I still haven't contacted him ... I'm bad, but I will. You can count on it.

Welcome back to town!

I got thirsty and drank your drink ....but we can probably find you another.
Tell me when is a good time for you, and we'll arrange to meet.

Trent

Al Head sent me this note, he is planning on being in Marietta. To those of you who may be on one of the 5 year cycles that the college pushes, that gives you 2 reasons to come back.

Rick!

Congratulation on moving back to Marietta. I look fondly back on my time
there, and I would probably view living there as a return to my youth. Pay no
attention that what little hair I have left is white. Obvously, 2008 is also the
30 year for class of 78.

I know many from that class will also be in attendance. Your letters are
great Rick. It sounds from these letters that indeed DTD-EU chapter is doing
well. Thanks for the update. See you in October!

Neal Mettler sent this note, it works that way with me too Neal. And when I hear from one of them, it's almost a rush. Hope to see you in October.

Rick,

Nice to hear from you again. Just looking at those names from the early 70's
brought back many memories.

Neal Mettler

Lance Koved sent me this note, I don't know if it is true that he and Joe got together again because of these emails. But I'm going to take the credit anyway. Glad to see you guys got together again, bet the stories were funny!

Hi Rick:

Hope you are enjoying Marietta. Spoke to Joe Doniger. By the way, Joe and I
were roommates for 3 years at Marietta. We had dinner last night with our wives
here in Florida and saw each other again for the first time in 32 years.

Really had a great time.

Lance

I wrote Shawn Selby concerning the blog he was going to write about his move to England. Here is the response he sent me. I haven't seen the blog entry yet, when I do, I'll let you all know.

Hi Rick.

Sorry I've been so out of touch. Things have been crazy here. We published
the first issue in December and have done one for January already and are doing
a second one this week for January. We go weekly the beginning of February.
We've also launched our Web site with daily breaking news and I've been
overseeing that as well.

But anyway in my precious spare time I've been looking for a flat. I'm
lodging in someone's spare room right now. But I've found a great flat in
Manchester's City Center, near my office. I get the keys tomorrow (Tuesday) and
I'll be moving in this week. Once I do that, I'll be ready to do a blog post. I
didn't want to do one earlier as I wanted to get "settled" first. And getting my
own flat makes me officially "settled."

I haven't heard from the undergrad you mentioned, so go ahead and forward the
note he sent to you to me!

Cheers!

Shawn

We have some news about a couple of our undergrads doing well. I got this information from the Delt website. Anthony Wind did well in the WVa theatre tryouts. Congratulations and good luck Anthony.

Four Marietta students advance in W.Va. Theatre Auditions

Front row —
Maggie Smith and Stephanie Tett; Back row — Andrew Wind and Patrick
SimoneNovember 30, 2007 -- Theatre students are accustomed to entertaining
audiences with their performances. But part of studying the performing arts is
learning how to be successful in the audition process, which even for veteran
actors is a nerve-racking process.
"While being a theatre major I am
certainly used to performing onstage, the stakes are raised so high at an
audition that it is hard not to get a bit nervous," said Patrick Simone '08.
In November, nearly a dozen Marietta College theatre students participated
in the first-round of stage tests during the West Virginia Theatre Conference
Screening Auditions, held in Inwood, W.Va. Four Marietta students—Simone, Maggie
Smith '09, Andrew Wind '10, and Stephanie Tett '10—scored in the top 40 percent
of the auditioning group, qualifying them to move on to the next round of tests,
which take place in March in Chattanooga, Tenn. Success at the next level will
ensure them a summer internship with the West Virginia Theatre Conference. Of
the 142 students who auditioned in November, only 58 students plus two
alternates were invited to the March auditions.
Theatre professor Jeff
Cordell accompanied the students to the auditions. Proud of what the students
learned and accomplished during this process, Cordell has high hopes for his
qualifiers and for the College's theatre department.
"The event is a major
experience for all students who attend it, as it allows them to see more of
their peers, to compare their work, and to recommit to their training in theatre
and to their education in general. I remain proud of both their preparation and
their professional attitudes at the event," Cordell said.
Auditioning for a
role can take months of preparation, but the audition itself may last only 60 to
90 seconds.
"It is mind boggling to think of how much time we put into such
a short period of acting. Now that is dedication," Tett said.
The students
agreed that what drew them to Marietta College was the theatre department. Each
of them saw something in Marietta's faculty and curriculum that they couldn't
get anywhere else.
"I saw that I would be able to explore all facets of
theatre including directing and playwriting, as well as technical aspects. After
visiting the college and meeting with the faculty of the theatre department, I
knew Marietta was the perfect fit for my personal style and needs," Wind said.
Cordell is proud of what the students who represent Marietta College have
done and very thankful for the students he has the chance to work with.
"For
my second year of teaching at Marietta, I am so grateful that I have great
students to work with and that the preparation in our department is connected to
the real world of working theatre," Cordell said.

Zach Gay qualified for the nationals in track and field. Hope that the qualification stands Zach. Interesting thing when I read the article, there was another Delt who had his college record beaten this year. Chad Showen is the Delt. Congratulations on an outstanding season so far Zach. Keep up the good work.

Gay provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championships at Marietta's First
Glimpse Meet. Five school records also fall on Saturday Dec. 8, 2007

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College track & field officially kicked off its
indoor season Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon with a First Glimpse Meet at the Dyson
Baudo Recreation Center. The non-scoring meet, which also featured Concord
University from Athens, West Virginia, produced its share of individual
highlights. The story of the day came in the men's high jump, when sophomore
Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) cleared 2.01 meters (6-07), which provisionally
qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The event, hosted by Ohio Northern University, will take place March 14-15 in
Ada, Ohio.Five school-record performances accompanied Gay's effort on Saturday.
Junior Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) set a new school record en route to
winning the 800m Run. Mitchem finished in 1:57.60, breaking Pat Gragan's 1984
time of 1:57.70.Freshman Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) broke the

clearing 4.30m (14-01). Chad Showen had the old record, a 4.26m (14-00) vault in
2005.Sophomore Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) broke the Lady Pioneers' school
record in the 3,000m Run. Robertson crossed the line11:07.72. Teammate Shannon
McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele) set the previous record, 11:35.66, at the meet
a year ago.Freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) broke Marietta's long jump
record with a mark of 4.97m (16-04). Melissa Schulte held the previous record, a
4.91m (16-01.50) jump at a meet last year. Beckner, Gay, Leach, Mitchem and
Robertson all qualified for the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, which
will be hosted by Otterbein College March 7-9, 2008. Six other Pioneers joined
them in qualifying for the Conference championships; junior Jesse Larrison
(Batavia) in the 800m Run (2:29.66), freshman Olivia Holiday
(McConnelsville/Morgan) in the Pole Vault (2.75m/9-01), senior Breanne Kosar
(Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central) and freshman Ericka Shafer (East Canton) in

Chili) in the 3,000m Run (9:19/71) and junior Brian Pallini (Medina) in the Shot
Put (13.47m/44-02).Marietta is back in action January 19 when it plays host to a
group of schools for the Marietta Open #1, the second of six home meets during
the 2007-08 indoor season. Sophomore Zach Gay provisionally qualified for the
2008 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday

This is pretty long already so I will end it with the new addresses I have gotten since last time. Thanks to Joe Mester for most of them. Saturday, January 05, 2008

Good Morning everyone and Happy New Year,

I'm sorry that it has been so long since I wrote, but I have gotten moved and am in the process of settling in here in Marietta.

I really had a pretty uneventful trip across country, with the exception of Texas. There the weather was pretty bad, with dense cloud cover and wet roads. Fortunately for me, Darrell Pritchard was driving that stretch, so he got the brunt of that, plus me being a backseat driver. I'm surprised that he didn't throw the keys at me and make me drive! Thanks so much for coming along and helping, Darrell, you don't know how much I appreciate it.

I also have to say 'Thanks' to Randy Williams and his children. They showed up Sunday morning and helped unload the truck, with their help and my 'supervision' we got it all off and into the house in an hour, with nothing broken.

One terrible thing that came out of the move though is that I lost my Comcast email account. I never thought of that happening so quickly. I had to reenter every name and address by hand here on Gmail, and what a pain that was, over 250 names. Please make note of my new address, if you want to get in touch with me. But even worse, I lost all the mail that I got since the last email I wrote. And I know that there was a couple of addresses in it that I didn't get to forward to Hops, so they aren't in my address list. Please, if you sent me something since the last email ( on December 8) send it again.

I don't have any 'Delt Stories' to share with you this time, obviously, so I can't send anything out for you, but please send in a story, or some pictures, or something for our booklet. Dave Broome is collecting all of that information so he can put it together for us. Only a few months to go on that. And now there is only 10 months to go till Homecoming. I hope that you guys have made your reservations.

I did hear from a couple of guys at my gmail address, Lance Koved sent me this short note:

Rick,
Hope that your move went well and you are now enjoying the cold
weather.

I have heard from a number of people planning on returning to Marietta this
fall. Hopefully I will see a lot of familiar faces.

I sure hope so Lance. That's what it is all about.

Then Steve Critchlow sent me the following note, with a new address. For Jim Meads. I'm glad to hear that things are looking up for you Jim, my prayers are with you.

Hi Rick!
Wishing you and all our brother Delts a most happy, healthy, and prosperous
New Year!!!

Just wanted to let you know of an E-mail address for a 'missing
Brother' you've previously requested, namely, Jim Meads -'72. His E-mail
is: **removed for privacy reasons** I spoke to Jim on New Year's
night.

He lives in Silver Spring,MD and had to retire from Graybar Electric Co.
last August after 33 years with that company due to serious health problems. Jim
was diagnosed with stomach cancer last January and has been undergoing an
ongoing treatment regimen for it since last February, He also had to undergo
gastric bypass surgery early last year as part of this battle.

He is still the same 'low key' guy that those of us from the early 70's
remember and is staying remarkably positive in his attitude. He did tell me that
this particular form of cancer does NOT have a very good statistical cure rate,
so he would welcome any support from his brother Delts in the form of prayers,
positive thoughts and encouragement, etc. as he continues to fight this very
tough foe in 2008!

On a positive note, his condition has improved and stabilized enough since
last summer that it looks like his oncologist will soon approve and issue the
medical clearance Jim needs to be able to return to work at Graybar on a
part-time basis in the near future.

Hope to make it back to Marietta myself this coming October to 'catchup'
with many fellow alums at the EU 40th celebration. Till then ...

Fraternally Yours,
Steve Critchlow - '72

My plan is to get in contact with Matt Dole in the next few days to find out where he got to on our plans for homecoming, so I should have more to report the next time. That's all I have this time, I'm here in Marietta. So if you should happen to be in town, give me a shout.

Speaking of that, Trent Elliott, where is my 'Welcome home' cocktail? Remember, you promised me one. And Chuck Robinson, I haven't forgotten our dinner on January 15th, before the basketball game.

Here are a few names of guys that I'm missing (in the move I lost my sheet, so I don't know who I've asked for and who I haven't - it's hell to get old): Joe Baker, Peter Rosenberg, Peter Ross, Joseph Farrell, William Warner, Roger Coffman, Joseph Cohn, Paul Schoenfeld, Thomas Lindvail, Doug Shaffer, Gordon Turner, Mark Ewald, Peter Grob, Mike Stein, John Alligood, Paul Craft, Larry Brown, Scott Elger, Ric Gough, Mark Russell, and Rodney Stoltz.

Have a great week, Rick Neel '73

Matt Dole sent me the following story from the late 90's. I'm sure that every era has a story (or 50) to share, put your thinking cap on. After his, I'll post my story. It's not to blow my own horn, but it is a bit more on the serious side, so you can see that there is room for both. I hope that you enjoy them. Rick Neel '73

I wanted to get a couple of the younger guys thinking, and no one who was around
in the late 90s has more stories than Tim Cox - who is now an "accomplished" actor in New York (sorry for the quotes... I just can't accept that my roommate is getting positive reviews in the New York press). Otis (his pledge name) could have a whole chapter in this booklet we're putting together, but with the presidential funerals topic I thought I would share his. It's an easier topic than delving into the time he took a leak on my computer printer. Apparently Hewlett Packard printers and American standard urinals look very similar early in the morning after St. Patrick's
Day. But I digress. Otis had a Viking funeral. After a beautiful eulogy affording Otis all the respect he deserved (none!), black-robed brothers lit up tiki-torches and loaded the table top holding Otis onto our shoulders and walked down Fourth
street, up Putnam and turned onto Fifth stopping at the Chi Omega house. What a sight. After convincing the house mother that Otis wasn't really dead (I told you he's an accomplished actor), she decided the dead body needed to be put on ice and promptly pored a nice sized bucket of ice down Otis' pants. Because he is a consummate professional... and because we weren't letting him off that table, Otis had to endure a rather cold ride back down the hill to the house before he was able to relieve himself (luckily, this time, not on my printer). I'm sure there are other stories out there not only about Otis, but others guys from the late 90's and early 00's. Of course, there aren't any stories about me... no matter what Otis or anyone else says.
And here is mine:

Building Brotherhood -1971

"It was a dark and stormy night." That is the way Snoopy always starts his novels. In this case it was true. Mid January, cold, snowy and drunk. That was the setting for the end of our "Help Week." We had already taken our fraternity exam and
initiation was right around the corner. Just this final thing to do. The "Bag Baker Memorial Walk."

Let me take a minute to explain what the "Bag Baker Memorial Walk" is. It took me many years to realize that it was designed to build brotherhood, and it really did. It also built friendships, I still feel very close to all of those guys, and wonder what ever happened to Patty occasionally. At any rate, the walk was actually a scavanger hunt, where the Actives went around town and hid empty pop bottles. Each of the bottles had a clue to find the next bottle.

Al Morrison, Randy "Awk" Williams, Andy James, Darrell Pritchard
(he had already activated but missed the Walk when he was still a pledge), Patty
Ritchie
(my girlfriend and later one of our original Little Sisters), and me. That was the group that headed into our personal history.

As I remember, there were about 24 of those bottles that night. At midnight, we took the clue to find the first bottle and our bottle of vodka screwdrivers and headed out into the snowstorm. As the night went on and we found our bottles (and got our bottle refilled by the active assigned to keep track of us, Joe Mester. Thanks for that Joe!) crisscrossing the city. We had a great time and from time to time had to help each other find our way. I remember many things about that evening, but the one that really stands out to me is laying in the middle of the road making "snow angels" with my big brother, Darrell Pritchard.

The actives had hidden those little coke bottles from the college campus proper to Mound Cemetary, to the Hospital, to the college boathouse on the West Side (that is where we made the snow angels, coming off the Washington St. bridge), and many other places. It caused us to walk around town for 3 or 4 hours looking for bottles.

When we got done, sometime late in the night, we were very cold, very tired, and (can I say this, in this age of political correctness?) very intoxicated. But we all felt a feeling of accomplishment because we completed our assigned task as a team. Then we fell asleep.

Let's see what has transpired between me and that group from 37 years ago. Darrell Pritchard and I are still close friends and play golf with each other a couple times a
month. We both have season tickets to the Arizona Wildcats football program, and just generally try to spend some time together when we can. Al Morrison and I have been in fairly consistant contact for the last 10 years or so, and I helped him find his current wife and former college sweetheart after a seperation of about 25 years. We still get together when I make my annual trip to Florida to visit with my Mother. Al is responsible for getting me re-involved with the Delts, he talked me into coming to Marietta for the golf outing one year, thanks Al! "Awk" Williams and I have been friends since I moved to Marietta in time for my junior year of High
School. None the less, we had fallen out of contact, and it was my interest in the 40th anniversary that put us back in contact. We have rekindled our friendship like we never were apart. It's been really nice to find an old friend. Andy James and I had lost contact also. With the help of an address list we got from International headquarters, I found Andy's phone number and called him. I don't think that I've talked to Andy since graduation, but we had a good conversation and I hope that we can continue and build on our refound relationship. I feel confident we can. Patty Ritchie and I have lost contact, I hope that she is doing well and is happy. Perhaps as a result of our effort to build contact with our past members, we will be able to get in contact again. I hope so.

I'd like to express my appreciation for that night to Chuck "Bag" Baker, whom I have never met, the actives who planned our night, Joe Mester for keeping us lubricated and keeping track of us so no one got hurt, and most of all to my "Walking Group" for making that night one to remember.

When we woke up later in the morning, we got ready for initiation, and took our place as activated members of DTD. A big day.

But the one I remember best, was the night before.

Hello everyone,

This information is important for those of you (all 250 that get this email I hope) that are planning on making the trip to Marietta next October. The Best Value Inn is now closed. It will be replaced by the Microtel Inn and Suites, but there is no guarentee that it will be open in time for homecoming. Fpr those of you that don't know, the dates for homecoming are October 24th thru the 26th, 2008.

Matt Dole has lined up some rooms at the Best Western for us. Here is his note:

coming in early, or leaving late, they can make those arrangements when they
call.

The hold up has been getting the rate, and it's not set yet,
but in the interests of time we'll have to run with "around $75 per
night"

The group of rooms is reserved under my name for Delta Tau
Delta.

The 20 rooms will be held until January 31, 2007, after
which any rooms not reserved will be opened up for the general public, so people
need to call and reserve a room quickly to get in on this group rate. For
those who don't want to stay at the Best Western, I have included a list of
other Marietta hotels below.

The selling points for the Best
Western are:

1. No further from MC than The Comfort or Holiday
Inns, just on the other side of town.
2. About a mile from the Valley Gem
boat launch
3. Walking distance to the Shrine where the dinner will be
held.

Since this is a pretty busy time of year for Marietta, I suggest that you call and make your reservations as soon as possible.

One thing that you might want to consider while making your reservations is various discounts you may be eligible for: AAA, AARP, Corparate discounts, etc. Also, you might try Priceline.com and see if you can save some money by naming your own price.

I got the following note from Joe Mester the other day,

Rick,

I have the following addresses looked up from the recently published
Marietta College Directory - three with e-mails already. Recommend you
publish the list and ask the people who knew them to cold call them, let them
know what we are doing, and try and obtain an e-mail address with
permission to add to e-mail list.

Joe

He gave me 12 missing brothers names and addresses. I sent emails to a few of the guys that I have on the mailing list already and asked them to contact the ones we had addresses for. We have a large enough base now that I may start going that was for the guys that I have an address for, but no email. If you are interested in helping with any of this, let me know. Or who knows, I may call you and ask like I did with Rich Wolf today.

Kevin Oliphant sent this response to Shawn Selby's comment in my last email. Ollie, I can't believe that any Delt would suggest that your balls be cut off with a rusty knife. I'm sure they would want to use a clean sharp one!

Please inform Mr Selby that a few of the 7 are step children. Also i have figured out what causes children to happen and have taken steps so that no more children will come about. ...And no I didnt get my balls cut off with a rusty knife and a table saw as per the wishes of Mike Connaty and few other sadistic delts.
Sincerely,
Sterile Ollie

Rich Miller sent the following note praising the story that Rick Dunkser sent in, I thought it was a funny story also. Keep them coming in. Dave Broome is collecting them and is very happy with the response so far. One thing he requests though, please make sure to include the year that you are talking about. Whether it was Fall, winter, or spring, if that is important and any other information that will be helpful in establishing the time frame you are talking about. Thanks so much.

I had a huge laugh reading about Ed Holmes, a story I had not heard, that
happened just 2 years after my graduation and while I was still in Ohio. He certainly would have had my vote and probably won on a national level in 2002. Thanks, Rick, for doing all that you are doing to bring us all together, up to date and providing a forum that, among other things, let's me know that my little brother is not among those Marietta Delts who have passed on to the Chapter Eternal.

Rich Miller, '74
I sent Mark Schlicker a note to get in touch with Joe Cohn and he sent me this note in response.

Will send letter today.
Looking for device to change slides into .peg files for 40th. Hopefully I can find the time to change over all my slides. I know I had a step by step building of the first two floats.

Best Regards
Mark Schickler, '69
The comment about changing slides into Jpeg files falls right in line with something that Seth Wolfson said in a note that he sent me. Anyone else that has something like this, we are interested.

Hey Rick,
Im sure that someone has suggested this, but i missed it. I think we should do a slide show that can run during the reception. I am not sure if there would be enough images from the pre-digital age classes to make it worth it, but maybe you can poll people and see whats available.
Cheers,Seth

One of the addresses with emails that I got from Joe Mester was Frank Hirsch, one of our founders. I sent him a note welcoming him to our email group. He sent me the following reply. I hope that he can make it back to join us next fall.

Rick,
I was pleasantly surprised to receive your e-mail message and enjoyed looking at the websites included in it. I'm glad to see someone making such an effort to organize alumni and collect the past history.

I'm one of those (sort of) lost alumni, as mentioned in one place on the blog. I didn't realize I was considered "lost" since I have always been on the college's mailing and alumni list, but perhaps it is not coordinated with your own.

Actually, I'm not supposed to be found since I worked hard at school to earn the title of "The Phantom Delt!"

Seriously, I noticed that you are collecting Delt memorabilia. Being the proverbial "pack-rat," I have saved some of my college stuff (like a beanie, that was mentioned somewhere in the blog). I also have some old pictures and perhaps most unique, I have some old Super-8 movie footage I took while at Marietta. I am in the process of having it converted to DVD, but it is not very good quality. There are several clips that have many of the original members in them.

I don't know if anyone would be interested in these, but I would be willing to share them with whoever might be interested. I think I would need help from someone who may be more "techno-savvy" when it comes to converting and then editing these movies. I'd be happy to arrange to meet with anyone who would like to take on such a project.

I live fairly close to Marietta and still have in-laws in nearby Little Hocking. We often travel to the area and I could even make a trip to MC with enough advanced planning.

I am considering trying to make the 40th anniversary gathering during Homecoming. It would be great to see some of the gang again and to reminisce (which you tend to do a lot of when you get to be our age). Do you think anyone would like to see these movies during the anniversary?

Anyway, let me know what might interest you and the others. I'd be glad to help wherever I can.

Frank
Did you notice that he mentioned that he has movies from his time in Marietta. I wrote him and told him that what he had was gold for us. And a beanie, this is the motherlode for memorabelia. Who out there is technosavvy and can help Frank make this stuff work for us? Let me know.

I also heard from Neal Mettler, another address that I got from Joe Mester. Good to hear from you Neal. You asked what you could do, I only have one thing to ask. Come back to Marietta for homecoming. I hope to see you there.

Rick, Good to here from you. Let me know what I can do.

Ted Smith is one of the guys I asked to contact a couple of brothers that Joe sent me addresses for. He called both of them, got one and spoke to the wife of another. He let me know the results of his efforts in this note;

Rick:
I had a nice talk with Murray Talasnik ’71 today and informed him of the big shindig.

He is a criminal lawyer and, obviously, has a chaotic schedule…but I told him to try and block out the October dates.

He was treasurer, I believe when I was president.

I am hopeful he will attend.
=========================
I talked with the wife of Mike Stein ’72 and he is supposed to email
me.
=========================
The 40th Anniversary festivities include wives…yes/no????
Take Care, Rick,
Ted

It's always nice to talk to someone you hadn't talked to in a long time. I know because I called Rich Wolf today. We got to talk for a bit and it was really nice to hear from him. The reason I called him was to ask him to try to get ahold of Larry Brown and Dave Mogil, two brothers from his era that we are missing. He asked me an interesting question while we were talking, "Who all do you know is coming to homecoming?" I mentioned several of the names that I have heard from, but I know that there will be many others coming who haven't said anything to me yet. So here is a request for you all. If you are coming to homecoming 2008 to join in the celebration of 40 years of Delta Tau Delta. Drop me a note letting me know. I'll keep track of you and let everyone know who is coming. Just think about it, if a classmate of yours knows you are coming, that may be just what he needs to know to decide to come himself. You don't need to write a letter, just reply with "I'll be there" and that will be enough. Thanks, even if you have told me in the past, please let me know again. I didn't track it before.

One thing I need to mention. Our homecoming weekend celebration certianly includes wives and significant others. The only thing they would be excluded from is a ritual meeting and/or an activation. Everything else is definately open.

The alumni speakers that have stepped up so far are Greg Maloof, Ken Kavula, and Rich Wolf. That covers the late 60's and mid 70's so we are still looking for the late 70's, the 80's, 90's and 00's. The time frame we are looking for is about 10 minutes and the subject matter is entirely in your hands. Let me know if you are interested, or I may give you a call and ask. Ken is planning a power point, so the equipment for that will be there, if you wish to take advantage of it.

Here are the new addresses that I got this week, thanks Joe! Murray Talasnik, Frank Hirsch, Alan Head, and Neal Mettler **addresses have been removed for privacy reasons**

Here are the missing brothers for this week: Stephen DeLong '80, David Duffy '80, Theodore Haase '80, Stephen Marino '80, Jeff Salway '80, Kevin Gieger '81, Helmuth Hinz '81, Walter Meneses '81, Jeffrey Myers '81, Brett Burkey '82, William Costello '82, George Dee '82, Rick Eckstein '82, Duke Weller '82, Bruce Goldfarb '83, Richard Ptak '83, Donald Sirrell '83, Steven Bennett '84, William Cruse '84, Jay Ehret '84, Gregg VanDerLey '84, Mike Malone '85, John Marfy '85, Kelly McKerahan '85, Adam Pyles, '85, John Rhein '85, Jon Townshend '85, John Baxley '86, and Jeff Gardner '86.

I'll do my usual, under a separate email, I'll post another 40th anniversary letter. Or maybe 2. Keep your thinking cap on and send something in, just remember to include who you are, what year you are writing about, and what season it occured in (if appropriate).

That's all I have this week, I hope that your holiday season is special. Rick Neel '73

DTD at MC #56.5

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Here is the story that Rick Dunsker wrote for our 40th booklet. I hope that you enjoy it.

Delta Tau Delta - Epsilon Upsilon
Mid- 1970's

I'd like to thank Dave Broome for his note encouraging us to send in stories about our experiences as Delts at Marietta. I had talked to Rick about this exact thing a number of months ago, but never got my butt in gear to do my part. So Dave (and the Classes of '75 - '79), this is for you.

What made the Delts such a fantastic group to be a part of in those years was that we did everything our own way, which usually put us at odds with the conventions about Greeks of that time. We were by far the newest house on campus, yet we
retired the scholarship cup more than any other house. We were the smallest house on campus, yet the most ethnically diverse (before "diversity" became a buzzword). Our chapter was full of guys who, in their freshman years, swore they would never join a fraternity. Put politely, most other Greeks weren't quite sure we "belonged", and we loved it that way.

Case in point: Our '76 yearbook picture. While all the other houses that year had their pictures taken in or around their houses, we had ours taken... somewhere more interesting (see attached). What a bunch of miscreants.

In this spirit, I offer the following two stories.

The "Greek" Scholarship Bowl

In the Spring of '75 we'd been named a Top 20 Chapter. The following Fall we considered what we our next steps might be. Someone mentioned starting a regional DTD competition like the annual basketball tournament held by the Ohio State (or was it the OU?) Chapter. We wanted it to be something "different", but that would be supported by the administration.

Eventually we settled on a quiz bowl. We wouldn't need to book a heavily used facility like Ban Johnson and our chapter would actually have a shot at being competitive. We knew this would be a huge undertaking and were afraid to just go for it without any practice. We needed a dry run, but with whom? The answer was
obvious.... the Greeks of Marietta. Given our rep at the time, though, our odds of getting more than a few houses to cooperate were nil. If we were going to get our dry run, we were going to have to do it under different auspices.

Luckily alternatives were available. A number of us, including Matt Sutko, Bob Peterson, and I were members of honoraria and Trustee committees, giving us unusual access to faculty and staff who would be crucial to getting rooms and resources. (Ya, we were a regular house full of big shots!) We posed the idea to these contacts, they instantly loved it.

There had been a Quiz bowl on campus 10 years earlier. In fact the Communications Department still had the old buzzers in a closet in case the idea ever made a comeback. They were glad to help. Now how do we get the rest of the Greeks to join in? In the first planning meeting we came upon an idea: What if there was no official
administrative sponsor? What if we somehow got the Greeks to sponsor the bowl themselves?

One of the great things about Marietta College was (and still is) the degree of access students get to faculty and staff. There are very few people whom one couldn't just walk in on if you had an issue or concern. One of the exceptions was the Dean of the College. Few students had ever seen the guy much less talked with him. A few days after our first meeting, the Presidents of each house received a letter from Dean
Bosch, on his stationary, congratulating the Fraternity and Sorority Councils on their idea to hold a Greek Scholarship Bowl. Of course, none of them knew anything about it, and luckily, none thought to ask the administration for fear of appearing out of the loop. The trap was set.

While other Delts worked on logistics with our faculty supporters, Matt Sutko and I took on the task of recruitment. A week after the Dean's note was sent, we visited
all the houses asking their presidents if they had discussed participation with their members yet. After varying degrees of upset and frantic "What's this all about?", folks who normally wouldn't have given Matt or I the time of day, anxiously agreed to do whatever we wanted of them. No one asked who started this "College Bowl" thing or why the only students involved were Delts.

Long story short, both Greek Councils agreed to "sponsor" the event. Every house helped gather prizes from local merchants and fielded a team. The questioning and judging were completely handled by faculty members, and the contest, literally, came down to the last question (I'm not exaggerating). But what made the event Hollywood-perfect was, you guessed it, the Delt team won!

As I understand it, the Greek Councils took control of the College Bowl and held it for a few years after that, but Epsilon Upsilon never did hold a regional Delt event. Oh,
well....

Ed Holmes for President

It was the Spring of '76, and student council elections were only days away. By the
mid-70s the student activism you younger brothers may have heard about was long
over. The U.S.'s involvement in Vietnam had ended, disco music was on the rise, and no one gave a rat's petute about "getting involved" in student government, or any other serious distraction from book and beer.

The part that matters: Only one guy (not person... guy) was running for Student Body President. He was backed by the TEPs and a few other houses, and we Delts didn't particularly like him. So as a number of us partook(?) that evening in the newly completed attic common space (it was fun while it lasted), we complained at one another. "How can we let D.M. run unopposed?!? Someone's GOT to run against him!"

The only guys who were willing were myself and Bob Peterson, both seniors and
ineligible. The group of 6 or 7 of us regarded one another through squinty eyes, and applied our altered consciousnesses to the problem. The answer soon became clear. Well, actually one of us just blurted out a nutty idea for a laugh.

"Why don't we run someone who doesn't exist?"

The idea did get a good laugh, but the more devious of us saw the brilliance of the
proposal:

- D.M. would no longer run unopposed. He would be caught completely off guard and take days to figure out what was going on (Ashton Kutcher would have been proud, if he'd been born yet).
- We could have a great time stringing the campus along for a few days, making fun of an institution that never had a lot of relevance to most students anyway.
- Most importantly, no one had to give speeches, answer questions about his platform, and be humiliated when he lost, or worse yet, have to serve as President if by some chance he actually won.

Perfect!

So who is this mystery guy, what's his name? He had to sound like a good, old Ohio boy... someone with integrity who you could trust... just the sort of straight arrow you'd expect to run for student body president on sheer principles. We settled on "Ed Holmes".

Now for the hard part: Marietta is a tiny school. Why are the only people who know this guy in the Delt house, and why are we helping him? Like Occam's Razor, the simplest answer was the best (and the most believable). Ed had just transferred from Denison University, in central Ohio. He was a Delt there and very active in
student government (BTW: There was no Delt chapter at Denison). When he heard that D.M. was running unopposed he said he would give it a shot even though he knew the chances were slim. No one had seen him before because he was living with his aunt and uncle out on Greene Street just past the inte rstate. How could this not be the truth?

Ed needed someone to speak for him during his frequent absences from campus. For that, once again, my little brother Matt Sutko stepped forward. A Poli-Sci major, and excellent debater, Matt had his schpiel/platform together almost before our party (oops, I mean planning session) broke up for the night.

This was Saturday night. The polls would open on Wednesday. We had a candidate, a cover story and a spokesman. It was time for the mighty Delt political machine to swing into action!

On Sunday Matt and crew created a huge banner announcing that Ed Holmes' write-in candidacy for president with Matt as his running mate for V.P. They hung it across the front of Andrews Hall. I'm not sure who they bribed to pull this off, but
it remained there until election day.

On Monday the campaign started in earnest. There was only one hole in our plans that could sink Ed's legitimacy, the student files in the Admin. building. Luckily, another fine brother, Shea McGrew, had some pull with a relevant administrator... his mother, Louise, worked in the Records Department.

That morning Matt and I let her in on the gag. Once she understood that D.M. would win regardless, she put Ed Holmes' name on a manila folder and placed it in the appropriate file drawer. If over the next few days anyone came to inquire whether Ed was a student at the college, she agreed to look in the drawer and respond "Yes, I have a file for him." We Delts could also tell those who challenged us, "If you don't believe me just check the Records Office." We were ready to face the
voting public.

That evening we learned that many other students were unhappy with D.M.'s "inevitability factor". Delta Tau Delta was an exception to numerous rules in those days. One of them was that 507 Putnam didn't house enough people to warrant food service. Those who lived in the house had a choice of cooking their own meals, or making other arrangements. Three of us, Dave Barker, Geoff Dean and I ate dinner at the Tri-Sigma sorority on Fifth Street.

That night, completely unplanned, Geoff and Dave sat at one end of the long dining table and I at opposite end. As the food was being served I casually asked, just loudly enough for the 20 women at the table to hear, "So Dave... you think Ed's
got a chance of winning?" Without missing a beat Dave responded, "I don't know, we don't have much time 'til the election." Of course, everyone wanted to know what we were talking about. When, with unbelievable sincerity, Geoff added, "Ed just doesn't think it's right for D.M. to run unopposed," one of the Tri-Sigs responded, "I don't care who he is, I'll vote for him." The race was on.

By Tuesday evening students still weren't certain whether Ed Holmes was a hoax, but just in case D.M. declared that if he didn't receive a majority of the votes he wouldn't take office. On Wednesday, the people spoke with their ballots, and luckily, he didn't have to keep that promise. D.M. won, but considering he was running against a phantom his majority was less than impressive. In a 3 1/2 day campaign, Ed Holmes got 41% of the votes, on write-ins. Hoo-hooooo!

The incident so angered the student "powers that be" that even though it was one of
the events of the year, the only mention of it in the '76 Mariettana was in the Delta Tau Delta blurb (see attached). The campus was punked and the Greeks were pissed. Mission accomplished!

I encourage other brothers from the mid-70's classes to straighten out the errors in my stories and share their own concerning other memorable happenings.

I also want to give a huge THANK YOU to Rick Neel for all he's doing to pull us back
together. He was one of the first guys I met when first I wandered into 507 Putnam to check out the Delts. His unprovoked and irreverent insults towards a perfect stranger (think small-town Don Rickles) were among the things that convinced me the Delt were worth a second (and a third) look. You're doing a fantastic job!

Regards,
Rick Dunsker, Class of '76

Hi everyone,

This is going to be a fun email to write, the response to Ted Smith's memories has been tremendous and gotten several new stories. A couple of them were forwarded to about a third of you, so if you have seen some of this, bear with me. I have to explain here, due to the number of us that are now in the email registery I have to send these out in 3 sections. I have found that once a distribution gets to 100 a lot of spam filters will kick the message out. So I have stopped at 99 and begun another folder. I have 2 1/2 folders now. Pretty good I think for the way we are getting them.

At any rate, we are less than a year away from our 40th anniversary and things are beginning to snowball. I have had a couple of brothers volenteer to speak at our banquet. Greg Maloof and Ken Kavula are planning on sharing some experiences with us. Both of them are from our very early years, Greg - our 1st President and Ken graduated in 1969. We would like to have speakers from every generation if possible, so please don't be shy. Ken has said that he was going to set up a power point display, so the computer will be there if anyone else wants to go that way. We'd like to keep the comments in the 10 minute or so range, so we can get as many stories as possible in. If there are any Undergrads that would like to share an experience with us, that would be fine. We have also had several brothers say that they have pictures that they are going to dig out and share with us, and some Delt memorbelia (sp?). So if you have something, make plans to share.

I think that I will continue to share some of the stories that I've gotten since Ted's went over so well. I don't feel that it will distract from our booklet, and it may encourage others. But before I do that, let me share the general comments that I have gotten since the last time.

J.P. Clowes sent me the following note;

Rick,
Hope everyone is doing well. We were in the Marietta area during homecomming, but had to stay away from campus, as we were meeting some close friends who were in from North Carolina.

I'm glad you sent the stories from Ted. We work together and hearing him tell some of these stories is great. I'm glad he was able to share them with the rest of the group. The tradition of having a "wake" for an outgoing president was something that survived even into the 1990's, and was a lot of fun. I will have to try to write up some of my memories of how the tradition changed over the years.

My wife Nina is a prolific scrapbooker, and would love to help out Wiona. Please have her contact us and let us know what we can do to help. Also, Duane Stokes was a lost brother from one of your earlier lists, it sounds like Wiona is in contact with his wife? (I know they live here in Columbus, but I don't know where,
sorry.)

Anyway, Please count us in as needing a room for next year. I will be there come Hell or high water.

J.P. Clowes '93
Hear that Wiona? There is some help for you. I'm still not sure how we can work the logistics of this. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Also, since you are in touch with Duane Stokes' wife, could you get me the email address? I haven't been able to get it.

Rich Miller sent me the following. I don't know where he got the idea I as a big mouth though.

Hey Rick,

You were always a noisy SOB and you continue to be. Thank you! Keep blabbing.

What you have been doing for us is fantastic, especially in linking the generations of EU alumni who founded Crescent Colony, our generation of EU and the classes who
have come after us.

As to the thoughts and hopes sent forth by Brother Broome, what a perfect request, search and challenge? The response you have received from Brothers back to the founding of Crescent Colony to the present shows how he has hit the nerve to
release and share the memories and energies of our Chapter. I really look forward to meeting Brother Broome and more of my younger Brothers in October.

While reading of the demise of some early Delt hangouts, I, with you and possibly Joe Matheny, hope that we could educate our current generation of Delts to the skill of locating donuts at 2AM on a Sat. or Sun. morning. Kindly research this before my
arrival .

Thanks for all you do,
Rich Miller

Sorry to tell you this Rich, but Brownie's is gone. 2 floods and a fire were apparently more than he could take.

Lance Koved wrote to say that he has made his hotel reservations already. Great news Lance, I'm looking forward to seeing you also. I spoke to Matt Dole today and he is still working on the block of rooms for us. He promises to let me know soon. Hurry Matt, times a wastin!

Shawn Selby sent this note from Merry Old England:

Hi Rick.
Greetings from Manchester and greetings from the United Kingdom. I have been here two weeks now and it seems both like I have been here just for a couple of days and it also seems like it has been a lifetime.

I just wanted to pop you a note to let you know I made it here OK. I am still living in a hotel, but should be moving into a flat (apartment) as soon as tomorrow. I'll do a post on the Web site with pics in a couple of weeks, assuming our Brothers might be interested in my little life adventure. So far this is everything I expected and, despite being mentally prepared, far more overwhelming than I thought it would be.

The hardest thing has been adapting to the accents here. Manchester is a crossroads in the UK & Ireland, so almost every accent in the British Isles can be found here.
Depending on the person I'm speaking to, it ranges from me not being able to
understand him or her at all to not understanding every fifth or tenth word.

Also, I have experienced something I never thought I would experience: homesickness.

Anyway, I'm glad that there is movement among the alumni to carry on the writing project I had to reluctantly drop. Knowing my Brothers as I do, I know I'm forgiven for walking away from it, but I'm so proud that others are stepping forward. Reminds me of the flag and badge ceremony.

Anyway, as they say here in the Empire, "Cheers!"

Shawn

P.S.: Someone needs to explain to me how Ollie has been allowed to
spawnSEVEN times!

Chuck Robinson wrote with the following;

Hey,
How are things going? Well I hope. If your still or are going to be in Marietta let me know. I'll be there sometime soon.

By the way you seem to have left out our little sister program in your addresses. I'm surprised that you forgot about them.....LOL

Chuck
I haven't forgotten Chuck, I just don't have the names or addresses, if any of you are still in contact with any of our Little Sisters, please let me know so I can include them. When I get moved back to Marietta, I'll get the names and begin to look for them. All help is appreciated.

Chuck also tells me that he is the Athletic Director for Athens High School and that he lives in Zanesville. We are supposed to meet and have dinner in January when he comes to Marietta to play the Tigers. I'm looking forward to that.

Here is an alumni story from Greg Hanson. Congratulations on quitting smoking, I did it in 2000 and am glad that I did. Hope that retirement goes well for you.

Nice to see the memories of our President of a turbulent times. Campus events included the largest hunger strike in the country in reaction to the "Invasion of Cambodia", several brothers participated. 10 days on crackers and water, yum.
Lots of fun memories as well. I cooked a Thanksgiving Turkey one year in the
old chapter house, forget how many it fed, but it was a good sized bird.
Quit smoking 26 years ago, now looking toward retirement as a clinical psychologist in CT, 30 years in the field, clinic, to private practice, to state
consultant.

Greg Hanson (72)
Rick Dunsker sent me a story for the 40th booklet, I think I will include in seprately for you all so I don't make this any longer than it already is.

Here is the list of lost brothers for this week: Joe Baker '67, Dr. Joseph Cohn '69, Franklin Hirsch '69, Doug Shaffer '71, Murray Talasnik '71, Gordon Turner '71, Peter Grob '72, James Meads '72, Mike Stein '72, Paul Craft '73, Scott Elger '74, Neal Mettler '74, Lance Zant '75, David Mogil '77, Greg McComas '77, Richard Hruska '77,Gregory Carriera '78, Peter Denio '78, Steve Dennis '78, and Alan Head '78. That is the 60's and 70's, can you help?

That's all I have this time, have a good week. Rick Neel '73

Hi again,
I just had a change of heart. I have decided that it is important to let you all see what Ted Smith wrote for our 40th anniversary booklet. Perhaps it will spark a memory from you and get a note for the booklet.

On a personal note, thanks for the compliment Ted. I don't know how much help I've been to the chapter, but like so many others, I try.

Here are the notes from Ted's memories. I hope you enjoy them.

Thoughts from my memory…

“Johnny’s”:

In 1967, when I was a freshman, I resided (with future-brother Sherm Koons ’71) in the now-defunct PUTNAM Hall, which was at the corner of Putnam & Seventh. Across the street was a dumpy little restaurant named “Johnny’s”. I ate there only
because, as many had told me, THEY will cash your checks. It was a dark, cramped, smokey, dismal place and thinking back, I’m pretty surpised I would have ever eaten anything served in that joint. As I remember, the burgers were good! (Who knows what was in them) I remember as you walked in the door there was a pinball machine off to the right and I spent time some great times with other brothers “flipping the solid metal balls”. I think Johnny’s was ripped down after my first year at MC.

“Burning of The College Bookstore”:

I remember the burning of the college bookstore which used to be directly across from the house @ 507. This was probably the spring of ’69 and it happened at about 4am. After the sirens woke us up, I remember sitting on the front stairs with Ron Rees & Greg Hanson smoking Marlboro reds---(that’s the only Marlboro that existed then) watching the fire, half-awake mumbling phrases of the times like “wow, man…check the flames”.

This was a VietNam War protest. I believe instigated by Dana Hibbard (a female college student ’70???) who, I believe, had founding ties to the college. She and her group took American flags off buildings in downtown soaked them with gas and set the old bookstore on fire. (The old wooden building was going to be torn down, but this fire certainly completed the process). I don’t remember the charges against the parties, but this was one of the many war protests that happened on campuses during VietNam---yes, even at MC. Look closely at composites of the 68-71 years and notice, the headbands, peace buttons, etc….real reflections of what was happening at the time.

"Fifth Street”:

You used to be able to drive right from the house @507 to The Fine Arts Center via Fifth Street…a regular street like any other in Marietta. I remember driving that route in my ’51 Ford while wasted on cheap wine, only to pull up to Fayerweather Hall to pick up a date…only to spill my guts in the parking lot and pass out. She was notified and I think that’s how I made it into her room for the rest of the evening. (NO CO-ED DORMS BACK THEN). The road that was once Fifth Street is now the gorgeous MC campus mallway.

“Cat’s Head”:

I don’t remember the year, but after we had nationalized, some of us had a great idea…let’s freak out the “worst” sorority Alpha Gamma Delta (long gone from campus). I am almost positive this was spearheaded by Joe Doniger ’71…I think he had “ins” at the Bio lab. He went down and got a formaldehyde jar with a cat’s head…with mouth wide open. A group of us got it to our house boxed it, and wrapped it with beautiful paper and ribbons. I think there was a note attached to “The Alpha Gams with love!…please open ASAP”. We set the box on the doorstep, rang their bell and hid in bushes nearby…later you should have heard the screams. We took off.

“507 Putnam Street Sun-Deck”:

They were countless times when we climbed up thru the narrow passage in the attic to get to top sun-deck. What a great place for drinking, and drooling over the Chi Omegas in their 2-piece outfits sun-bathing on their deck. Always a great time!

“The Ted Smith Memorial Mortuary Masquerade”:

All the brothers knew that during the summers I worked for the largest funeral home in Columbus (with thoughts of becoming a mortician). We always needed different concepts for parties…and one time a party theme was lacking and I said hey how about The Ted Smith Memorial Mortuary Masquerade. Obviously this would take some work, but what fun when we pulled it off. I was laid out on the large work table…in the front room @ 507 all overdone with makeup…and just “floured big time”…I was more than ashen. On the walls were pictures of me with black banners & wilted flowers and funerial music playing in the background. My pledge
brother, Steve Fox, was in the front row of seats…just in front of my head and
weeped incessantly until all came to “pay their respects”. Rabbi Joe Doniger
wrote and delivered the fabulous eulogy wh ich included something about each and
every brother. At the conclusion of his “powerfully touching message”…some
brothers slid me head first into a garbage can (at the head of the table) which
had painted on the side in dripping blood red paint “DEP IS DEAD”. (My nickname
in the house was Dep, short for my real first name, Deppen.). At this point, the
party music came on and the beer flowed and flowed. The party had started. This
theme took excellent teamwork to coordinate and all of the brothers made this
come off without a hitch. Speaking of Joe Doniger…he was respsonsible for
attaching “nicknames” to many of the brothers.

I think I have brochures and the eulogy from The Ted Smith Memorial Mortuary Masquerade. I will forward them for the Delt “achives”.

“Steve Fox”:

In 1968, Steve & I were suite-mates in Parsons Hall and became pledge brothers…just the two of us. As our pledge project we created the first wooden active pin to hang on the front of the house at 507 Putnam. Although it was our project, brother Don Wolfe was the guy who really helped us with the design and creation. We were both useless with mechanics and Don was a “wiz” (at almost everything). I
remember when Steve (“Foxy”) broke his leg…I carried his books, got his meals,
etc…as he hobbled around on crutches. It seemed like an eternity until he healed
up and could walk!!!!

Hope this helps,
TED SMITH ‘71

Hi guys,

I'm afraid that this will be a long email. I have received quite a few notes from brothers from my last email, as well as several comments from the email I sent from Dave Broome, so rather than my comments first, let's just get to the notes I've gotten.

From Nancy Matheny (Joe's wife) comes the following note concerning our undergrads. Nice news is always welcome!

As Joe(Matheny 75) was working the Ohio High School State Golf tournament as a rules judge, we were not able to attend the Homecoming events, I want to thank the underclass Delts; they are a great group of men and come through for their volunteer time, A very cold morning meet the men this Sat as they arrived on time to wash and wax the vans for O'Neill Senior Center for Make a Difference Day Oct. 27th.
Thanks to all!

We will be posting the photos on our website soon.
From Peter Weiner, my little brother. Yes Pete, the message did get to me. About a week after this one did. Sorry we couldn't hook up, for sure next year.

Hey Big Bro
Sorry we missed you while my wife (Karen) and I were in the area.
Unfortunately I had just acquired a "new " laptop that I used to travel with. In
refurbishing the laptop I did not have the time to transferee my contact and
other stuff. About the only thing I did get loaded was the GPS software.
I did try to reach you thru the alumni site but I guess the message didn't get
thru to you.
Anyway we saw some great fall leaves and mentally sent our thoughts to you and all the brothers during homecomings. Oh well maybe next year

Petedageek

From Kevin Oliphant, who stopped by the house on Saturday afternoon. I missed him sorry to say, but I have to comment on the 7 kids thing! Wow, what is your food bill? Glad you have raised the next Delt legacy!

For now **removed for privacy reasons** is the best way to contact me but i will get any mail either way. It was good stopping by the house over the weekend. My kids enjoyed seeing my long hair and beard from my freshman year. For the record i am now working for Naitonwide Insurance as a Senior Claims Representative. Im still in Vienna WV and only 15 minutes away from the house. I have 7 (Yes! Seven kids that keep me busy.) One of which cant wait to turn 18 and become a Delt. Life is good here in WV.
Keep me up to date as to whats going on with the house!
Mike Biefus sent this email, it's short and sweet. Welcome home Mike!

Rick,You can remove me from the "lost brothers" list! Mike Beifus

Randy "Awk" Williams sent me the following, thanks for the effort Awk. Don't forget to get his address to me.

Rick, Is Kurt Frank from Marietta? If so, he was a DeMolay and I believe his mother is still living inthe "BIG" city and if so she attends my old church (also Fergie's). If this is right, I will be glad to get his contact info.
Awk
From Jmac McEldowney comes the following announcement. Congratulations! May your life together be long and happy!

Hey Rick. Thanks for including me in your emails. Anyhow, I have some news for you to share with everyone since I didn't make it to homecoming thisyear.Last week I got engaged to my now fiance, Alicia. I popped the big question at dinner last
weekend on a visit to Columbus. It was very nice but we have been trying to plan
this week as our school district gets a fall break. The wedding will be next July
here in Dayton. That's all I have for now. I am hoping to make it to Marietta in
thenext few weeks so maybe we can enjoy some beers at the Townhouse (areyou
living in etta yet??)! Thanks for keeping us up to date. Jonathan "Jmac"

Greg Maloof sent the following message. As you can see, he's planning on attending the 40th, I hope you are too!

Thank you for all you do. Had a great week end - even though the campus has
REALLY changed !! The few Delts I met seem to continue our original
guidelines. From all reports all of us have a lot to be proud of at the MC
Chapter. Looking forward to the 40th !! Take care. Greg Maloof '67

Ashley Wollam, the chapter guide sent me the following note, to those of you who are interested in something to honor EU Chapter Eternal, take note. Ashley is working on it. I'm sure, with how the chapter ritual work is now, it will be something special.

Rick,
Hello! I hope all goes well.
Unfortunately, Delta Tau Delta does
not currently have a ritual for our brothers who have passed to Chapter Eternal.
I believe we had a simple ceremony ages ago, but that in the past half-century
or so it has fallen out of our ritual books.

That being said, I have always wished there were one, and I don’t believe this should stop us from making our own. I’ll get some guys together and write one up for the 40th. I might hold this off until December (I’m caught in ending a busy semester), but we’ll be well situated before the 40th.

Thank you for this suggestion! We’ll have to get together with you to see what you think of the ceremony once it has been drafted.

Cheers, Ashley

It is both of our thoughts that this should be a public ceremony, so your wives, children and significant others will be more than welcome.

Fergie sent me the following note. We now have a place reserved for our 40th anniversary banquet. It should be plenty big enough to hold all of us.

I have reserved the Shrine Club for dinner for October 25,2008 and paid the
deposit to hold it.The Shrine can cater the dinner and I think that is our best
choice. More details to follow.

The following group of messages are responses from Dave Broomes letter. I hope that the rest of you are putting your thoughts together for a letter. And we will, evidently have some memorbellia around to share.

Seth Wolfson has some pictures from the flood that he will share with us. Seth, if you could let me know how I can get ahold of them so I can get them copied.

Bill DeLong sends the thought that our Hugh Shields awards came during the 92/93 and 93/94 school years. Do you have any recollection about how you guys felt at being so honored? That would be interesting reading.

Greg Maloof sent me the following, along with volenteering to speak. That would be nice Greg.

Hi, Right now I am planning to attend. I would be honored to say a word or two.
Unfortuneately I had a total house fire after graduation & Delt ceremonies.
Nothing was left, but I think we had a historian to keep all news clippings,
pictures, letters, etc. Who are the 4 deceased members ?? Thank you & take
care. Greg

Unfortunately, Greg we have lost more than 4 brothers. My list shows 7 men. They are; William Havens, Tom Robinson, Edward Ives, Kevin Miller, Peter Cartoun, Fritz Absolon, and Kevin Hayes.

Mark Schlickler sent the following note, I hope that you can find them Mark. How about you BAM, do you still have yours?

If I can find them(pictures) I will start sending them. Bruce Miller also took alot of pictures.

Best regards Mark Schickler '69 Beta Delta Epsilon pledge and founding Crescent Colony and Delt Chapter member

Ted Smith sent the following; and included some thoughts for the 40th's booklet which I won't include here, but will forward on to the correct people to get it included.

Rick:
I enjoyed the thoughts that Dave Broome included in his letter.

First of all, Dave’s idea of a recognition for brothers who have passed is important.
Through the years, I believe only a few have passed (Bill Havens, Roger Coffman (?), Ned Ives, Tom Robinson (?) and they should be acknowledged---Whether we knew them or not, they were part of our family and remain in EPSILON UPSILON’S “Chapter Eternal”.

The strength of Epsilon Upsilon has always been in its diversity. We offered
what no one else on campus could offer: we weren’t just jocks…we weren’t just
drinkers…we weren’t just scholars…we were and remain a complete mix of
backgrounds, ideals and philosophies linked by the solidarity of Delt
brotherhood.

In the early years, the Delts were the under-dogs…but we struggled,
strengthened and survived while other houses drifted into oblivion (Sigs, TEPs,
Lambda Chis)
Thoughts from my memory…

I don't have Roger Coffman listed as having passed on. Does anyone know for sure?

Bob and Pat Bayer sent the following. I sure hope that you can find that material Bob. And yes, 2008 will be my 35th. How time flies, the only way I can tell, is my hair! I don't have nearly as much now. See the 2 of you there.

Rick,
We have some things that may be of interest; things that go back to
maybe as early as '66 til '72. As soon as we locate them, probably after
Christmas at the very earliest, we will let you know what we have. Hoping that
we will be able to attend Homecoming as it will be the DTD 40th and my (and
your) 35th.Thanks for all the hours and effort you have contributed on behalf of
the house!Pat & Bob Bayer

I got the following note from Mike Porath's wife, Winona. It sounds like a wonderful idea, a scrapbook. I don't know if that would be something we could get done before the 40th or if it something that would have to be done after. What do you guys think? It is far outside my area of expertise.

Rick,

I love the idea of putting together a 40th booklet. I would be honored to volunteer to put together a permanent scrapbook of these submitted pictures (I would make copies and return the originals) to keep in the house.

I wonder if you would be willing to put out a call to the "Deltwives" Club, to see who might want to help. While we weren't Delts, some of our experiences so overlap with our Delt husbands, that it would be an honor to do something for the chapter.

I know Angie Stokes would help...she is my "Big Sis" from Tri-Sigma...seems like lots of us married Delts...

Do you think anyone would like us to get involved, or would it be better if we just supported :)

Thanks
Wiona
Deltwife of Michael Porath '90

I don't know which would be better, my off the cuff feeling is why not get involved? You were during the undergraduate years. How about the rest of you "Delt wives"?

I have some new, and updated addresses for you. Remember, you can get the whole list at the Chapter website. It is password protected. The password is: **removed, contact Rick Neel or the chapter if you need it**.

Jess Raines, Mike Beifus, Tim Tokarczyk, Lee Boveroux, Tyler Snell, Dan May, and our newest future alumni (otherwise known as our newest pledge) Andrew Norris. Since this email is so long, I won't include a "lost brothers" list this week. That's all I have, hope that everyone has a great weekend! Rick Neel '73

Stories for the 40th

Monday, November 12, 2007

Hello everyone,

A few days ago I got the following note from Dave Broome. It has some suggestions for stories for the 40th booklet that we are going to attempt to put together. I thought it was full of great ideas but it is fairly long so I didn't want to include it in one of my regular emails (which I'm going to try to do today), so here it is, just as Dave sent it to me. Please take some time and write something, send it to me and I'll forward it along to the correct party. Remember, we are less than a year from the weekend.

Have a great week, Rick Neel '73

Hi Rick,
(Be warned, this is a long email)

We spoke briefly at homecoming this year about gathering stories from alumni for the 40th anniversary of the chapter next year. I don't know how much material Sean Selby was able to gather prior to his big move to the UK, but I certainly feel that the 'deadline' for submitting these recollections can be pushed wayout..probably to late summer of next year- that would give people plenty of time to ponder whether or not to submit a story. Also, if they have time to think about writing a little bit about their memories of the chapter... maybe some alums will also give some more thought about actually attending Homecoming 2008.

Regarding the stories that people submit: We all have stories about great times
with 'so-and-so' and 'what's-his-name'... but many guys may not feel like telling them because they don't see the point in telling a story about people that most EY Delts don't know.. and the fact remains that most of us don't know each other. Thats just the way it is.. but I think there is a way to submit stories that all of us - from
undergrads to the oldest alums - can relate to.

THE 'FIRST GENERATION': There are two items of interest that could be asked of these gentlemen:

These are the first group of Delts at Marietta- the ones who established Beta Delta Epsilon.. the ones who were there for the colonization of the chapter, and the ones who were there when our chapter received its charter on Saturday, November
23rd, 1968. The local history of our chapter is short on details to begin with... and, I think, completely absent of any first-person recollections. Personally, I have never read first-person stories of the early days from anyone- nor even seen a photograph from that period. Therefore- any alum from from that 'first generation' should be encouraged to submit his personal memories (whether or not he is going to attend Homecoming '08). Also, ANY photographs from the years 1966-1969.. and especially from the charter-installation date of Nov 23rd 1968 (not of the ceremony itself,
of course..but there was a formal held afterwards, I believe). Such stories would be of interest to all EY Delts, and hopefully these accounts would be incorporated into the 'permanent record' of our chapter history material. Regarding photographs from the 66-69 period.. of course it is asking quite a lot for people to dig up 40 year-old pictures- if they still exist at all... but someone out there may have a few snapshots which they feel are too amateurish or faded to bother showing. So what? A collection of images (regardless of quality) would be a nice addition to the permanent record referred to previously. Such pictures could be scanned and sent to you (or me), or copies provided- if any alum wishes to make that contribution. It would also be great if people in the photos could be identified individually.

THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE:

For most of us, Marietta College provided our only college experience. There have been some trends and events which occurred during our time on campus that will not be repeated. Those stories would be interesting to hear about. For example:
>Freshmen were once obliged to wear beanies (I think this includes you).
>Some local hangouts where Delts spent their down-time (i.e. Keg Room during the
80s)
>There was a devastating flood in the fall of 2004..surely there have been others.
>The shelter was moved from Putnam St to Fourth St in 1984 (dead of winter, I
believe)
>There was a time when drukenness and/or students 'fooling around' was grounds for expulsion.
>The chapter won its first Hugh Shields award in 1990 or '91..lets hear from those who accepted it.

And not to mention historical events which occured while students were on campus:
>On Monday May 4th, 1970 there were the fatal shootings at Kent State University; presumably the school year was session at Marietta.. although at the end of the spring semester. Campuses nationwide were closed; protests followed. Was Marietta one of them? What did students at Marietta do?
>Thursday November 9, 1989- the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ancient history now, but
even as a recent alum at the time, I was in shock at the very thought of it.. the 'red menace' that I (and you) were always taught to fear was starting to crumble. Some of the more politically minded undergrads must have been following this closely and pondering its significance with each other.
>Tuesday Sept 11th, 2001... not so long ago, but all the Delts who were undergrads then are now alumni. What happened on campus that morning? Were classes cancelled? Were a large number of brothers gathered together in front of a TV all day? There was a need for people to experience their national grief with others..and college students were in a unique position to be among their peers.

Finally, I don't know if the events during the banquet next year have been worked out completely.. But, instead of one or two people doing all the talking, perhaps one (or two-at-a-time) from each era (1960s, early 70s, mid 70s, late 70s...etc., could say a few words about their time on campus and the Delt experience. Some people like to talk (if only to hear their own voice).. and thats OK... and, some guys speak in front of people for a living and are accustomed to it. Certainly, nobody should feel obligated to get up and speak. That's just an idea I'm throwing out there.

Another idea for the banquet is to set aside a table for the display of"Deltabilia"...that is, EY Delt memorabilia from the past 40 years. Do you still have your beanie? I've never seen one. Does anyone from the 'first generation' still have their dog-eared copy of 'The Good Delt'? I still have a couple of silk-screened t-shirts from Delt theme-parties from the 1980s. Items which are unique to our chapter or the Marietta experience might make for some interesting conversation-starters.

Also, this being the 40th anniversary of the chapter, there are still very few of us who have passed away.. the total may only be 4 or 5..., but I don't know if there has ever been a proper recognition of the passing of, or moment of silence for those brothers. A brief moment of remembrance for them (complete with the list of names and a moment of silence.. no commentary at all...just the names) is an idea. Some may find this upsetting or distateful (I didn't know any of the fallen, after all), and if that is the case, then it certainly doesn't have to happen at all. I just think its a thoughtful touch.

That's just a few ideas that I've had for next year. Let me know what you think..and I'll be getting back with you.

Fraternally,
Dave Broome, class of 1988

Good morning everyone,
Homecoming is over. I had a great time and got to see some people that I haven't seen in a while. I also got to meet Greg Maloof, our 1st president. We got to have a nice visit and then watch him walk in the homecoming parade the next morning. We had a pretty good turnout for homecoming this year, about 25 alums came back. For a list of who was there, check the most recent Protimoi, which was published after homecoming, http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/alumni/protimoi/Protimoi_-_Fall_2007.pdf It has quite a bit of news concerning the chapter. Check it out.

At the House Corp meeting following the parade, we learned something concerning the fate of our chapter house. The college is working on its next "5 year plan" and it has as the centerpiece of it student housing. With the exploding number of undergraduates, both in incoming freshmen and retaining upperclassmen, the college is really feeling a housing pinch. As a chapter, we are working with the college to try to assure that the housing we get in the future (our house, as we have discussed in the past is in serious need of being replaced) is something that we can be proud of and the type of shelter that the chapter wants. The college is planning on making its plan public in February, so then we will have a better idea as to what we can expect. More news will be forthcoming, as we get it.

We have come up with a schedule of events for our 40th anniversary. Times are still up in the air but here is what we have come up with so far. On Friday night, we are planning on a cruise on the river with the Valley Gem. Saturday will be the homecoming parade and football game. Saturday evening will be a banquet. On Sunday there will be the annual undergrad vs. alumni football game. During the weekend we will have a House Corp meeting and a Ritual house meeting. The price tag that we have decided on (since I have asked for input on this issue and gotten none) is no more than $50 for the whole weekend. This doesn't cover hotel or bar costs, of course. We will have a cash bar at both the river cruise and the banquet.

I got the following note from Matt Dole concerning a block of rooms for next year, as well as some volenteers to edit our reunion booklet that Shawn Selby has had to relinquish due to his moving to England. So please continue to write a story for us and send it to me. I will get it forwarded to the correct person for editing and inclusion in the booklet.

Hey Rick - I'll go ahead and work on lining up a block of hotel rooms this
week. I was going to try to comfort Inn, but Andy stayed there and said
the rooms were sort of ratty, so I'm thinking of going with either the Hampton
Inn or the Holiday Inn. Not sure what kind of rate we can get since they
probably already sell a bunch for homecoming, but at least we'll have a block of
rooms to choose from. I'll have an update shortly.

Also, late Saturday afternoon Kevin Oliphant stopped by the house. He has a new email address. It's *removed due to privacy issues*

Finally, I am going to email David Broome, Eric Gustafson and Brian Rothenberg about keeping the "stories of DTD" going, and will hopefully have a new deadline and instructions by the time you send out your next update.

Could you provide me a list of the class/era agents you have so far? I think we might be able to work through them to get something to us.

I'll be glad to help fill in any gaps left by Shawn after his move - I know he was helping out quite a bit on different things.

Thanks
msd

Unfortunately, the undergrads managed to break the alums winning streak in our annual football game. It was a pretty physical game with quite a few sore guys on both sides of the ball. Wait until next year, we'll take the trophy back. (Oh wait, there isn't a trophy. Damn!, there should be.)

Here are some notes that I have received from the guys since the last email. They sent me several new addresses. As you find some of the missing brothers, please let me know. Also, with this email I have included the new members, our newest "prealums." Welcome guys.

From Trent Elliott, an announcement on his newest daughter. Congratulations Trent! What did you name her?

Rick,

I have news on a couple of the names on your list. Seth Pitasky's mother and my mother are friends, so I was able to track down his email. It is *removed*.

As far as Todd Myers, he will be delivering my second daughter some time in the next two weeks. My wife had a checkup yesterday, in which she told him that the MC Delts are looking for him. He said that he would get his contact information to Fergie so that you can add him to your list.

Trent Elliott
'01

Trent and Fergie, don't forget to get in touch with Todd and get me his address. Thanks!

Hops sent me the following note, and I'd like to mention that the picture he mentions is Andy Byers new son. He did get it posted, in email #51 I think. Also, he mentioned that Tom Gray will be the homecoming King candidate. He won. Congratulations Tom.

Hey Rick,
I will be sending out a Protimoi shortly after Homecoming week with
all the events that havetaken place this semster. In the meantime, our
fall rush went really well, we have 9 new pledges that have started going
through their pledge education period. There are still a few guys that we
feel will join, but they will probably wait until the spring semester due to
personal reasons. I will be adding there names to the email list and hope
to have an updated one up tonight (tomorrow, at the latest).

Our fall break begins this Saturday and goes until Tuesday. We will be coming back
right into Homecoming week and all the activities that go with that, as well as
preparing you and the other alumni who are coming in. Our Homecoming
candidate this year is Tom Gray and he will be representing the House in all of
the activities.

I will try to get that picture up soon. It shouldn't take too long to do.

Other than that, I will see you in alittle over a week. Are you coming in Thursday or Friday next week?
Hops

Dean Didato sent me the following new addresses, thanks Dean and welcome guys. Hope to hear from you in the future. Hope that you had a good time at the baseball game. I'd like to see a game in Fenway sometime.

Rick:
Bill Ludington (84’) has been sighted. He is living in Weston,
Florida and can be reached *removed* . I am certain that he would like to hear
from a couple of Delts.

James Mason (84’) and I attended a Boston Red Sox
game against the Blue Jays last month and had a great time. Jim can be
reached at *removed* .

Keep the news coming!
Best regards,
Dean Didato – Germantown, TN

Hops sent me the following email addresses that he picked up from the database at the website. If you haven't checked that out and filled it in, please take a minute and do so, so we can have accurate up to date information. The link to the site is: http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ You can also check the photos from the football game on Sunday and Delt Dah Day earlier in the semester. Kevin, I have 2 new addresses for you in this email, which one do you want me to use? Let me know please.

Kevin Oliphant - *removed* Jonathan McEldowney - *removed*

We are now up to 250 addresses, so we are getting closer to 100%. Thanks to everyone for the help.

I need some volenteers to call all of the brothers in your era to try to get them to come to our 40th anniversary, if you are interested (or willing) let me know, please. I have several, but need more.

Here are some brothers that I need help finding this week. Steve Newton '66, Peter Ross '67, Joe Farrell '68, Roger Coffman '69, Paul Schoenfeld '70. Thomas Lindvail '71, Mark Ewald '72, John Alligood '73, Lawrence Brown '74, G. That's all I have this time, have a good week. Rick Neel '73

Hi everyone,
Hope that you all had a great week, and remember that there is only 2 weeks left before homecoming 2007. I hope to see you at the house that weekend.

I haven't heard from the guys as far as any chapter news lately, so I can't tell you about that. I do know that rush is over now and the guys had high hopes on recruiting more high quality men to help the chapter continue to grow. I'll report on that next time.

Be sure to check out the Delt blog, Shawn Selby has posted an announcement concerning his future. I won't say more so go check it out yourself. Suffice it to say, he is really excited about it and it has prevented him from helping me out with the blog. http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/

I have received a couple of new addresses, one correction and a found "lost" brother. The found one is exciting to me since he is from my era. The replacement address is Bob Burns ** removed for privacy reasons** please make note of the correction. And the new brother is Tim Roark, welcome Tim, I'm glad that we found you. His address is: **removed** . Thank you Bob Kubota for finding Tim. He tells me that Tim is living in Seattle and working as a computer programmer.

Bob Burns sent me the following note concerning his new email address, and what is going on with him.

Rick,
I did get the email. Actually, I've had two e-mail addresses here
at The Ohio State University: one on the osu.edu domain and one on the
nrri.osu.edu domain. The nrri e-mail address is no longer valid.
(NRRI, by the way, is the National Regulatory Research Institute, where I
worked for 27 1/2 years. ) I have switched departments because NRRI is
leaving OSU. I am not going with them. Instead, I will continue at
OSU as a Research Specialist in OSU's Engineering Experiment Station working on
and leading the regulatory task on the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration
Partnership. At the moment, the auto reply is being generated for both
e-mail addresses. That will continue until I am able to switch off of the
nrri server, which I hope will be sometime late this week or next. This is
university red tape at its best.
Thanks,
Bob Burns

A while back, #46 I believe, I wrote about a music video that was shot at the house and a video done by a brother (Jon Bolden). Well Jon finally got around to responding to my questions about the two issues. Here is what Jon had to say:

Hey Rick,
I was reading through the old newsletters and I totally missed the parts
about the Delt related music videos and wanting details. Here's the story about
the "Flinch" music video filmed at the beloved Delt House. Ken
Mard
(a fellow Delt, class of 04?? maybe?), decided that he
wanted to shot a music video. The local band, Flinch, happened to be four of my
best friends and the perfect type of catchy-pop music. Ken decided to shoot it
in the house on the first weekend of school in 2004. It was a really long day
but a ton of fun. I think we could all agree the highlight was the guitar
player, Jeff Dutton, picking up a shirtless Bam Nethers. I remember making a remark towards Bam's size. I believe it was "Was that kid raised on pudding pops?" Casey Trail remembers better than I. As for my video, it was just something I threw together in my free time in Columbus. As usual, great job on the newsletters and I'm hoping to return for the formal next year. I hear it 's gonna be a doozy.I also heard you will be moving to Marietta? Something about a Walgreens opening. Whatever it is, good luck! I'm sure your close proximity will be a benefactor to the chapter.

I got a copy of a message from Bruce Masatsugu concerning a golf outing he makes every year to Phoenix, it was sent to my brother Jim. Wouldn't it be neat if all of the guys that live in Arizona could get together and play a round when Bruce is in town? I know that I would play if I was still here. I hope that you guys have a good time.

Jim,
How have you been? Rick says that you've taken up golf. Great
game.Anyway, as Rick said, we normally go to Scottsdale around January
orFebruary. Been doing this for about 15 years. He probably
mentioned thatwe did Tucson rather than Scottsdale last year. I think we
played Vistoso,Tucson National and La Paloma. We don't have any dates yet for
next year, it would be great if we could gettogether for a round either before
or after our Scottsdale outing. We normally fly in Thursday night and
leave Sunday night after the Sundayround. So...., if you're interested, I
could either come in on Wednesdaynight/earlly Thursday morning or leave on
Monday night. We could eitherplay in Scottsdale or Tucson. I'll let
you know when the dates are set. Until then, hit 'um straight
andlong! Bruce

Matt Dole, I have had a couple of responses to your request to get an idea of the number of rooms you will need to book for our 40th. And it is so early, I bet we have a HUGE turnout. Make your plans now and if you need help with a room, be sure to let us know so Matt has an idea about how many to book. The earlier the better, for Marietta is a small town and homecoming brings in a lot of folks. The dates are October 24th thru the 26th, 2008. Here are the notes.

From Greg Manko;

Hi Rick and Matt,
My partner Tim and I plan to attend the festivities next
year, so please block a room for us.Thanks! Greg

and from Joe Kirby;

Rick,

I am planning to attend the 40th anniversary of EY chapter in
2008, so any help with a room would be greatly appreciated. At the 25th,
my wife and I ended up in Parkersburg... a little off the beaten
path.

Thanks for your consideration.

I mentioned last time that I was going to list the brothers who have bad addresses in my lists. Hopefully some of you are in contact with these brothers and can get me a current address. If they are current, they are being rejected for some reason, so if you can let me know a better way to reach them. I will be deleting them from my list after this attempt if I don't hear from someone. Thanks!

Gordon Keller, Seth Pitasky, William Warner, G. Curtis Brown, Jonathan Young, Todd Myers, and James Berry.

That's all I have for this time, next go around I'll start asking for lost brothers again. Hope you can help. Hope to see you in Marietta. Rick Neel '73

Good afternoon to everyone,
I tried to write this the other day, got almost all done and (because I'm an idiot) then erased it! Got me all frustrated, so it has taken me about 5 days to get back to it!

Anyway, I got some responses from my last email, so I'll share them with you. As you know, homecoming 2007 is fast approaching, the weekend of October 19th, I hope you can make it. We also have a firm date for 2008, the year of our 40th anniversary. It will be October 24th thru the 26th. Be sure to start making your plans now, and let us know. Matt Dole is going to try to get a block of rooms at a reduced price at a Marietta hotel. But he needs to have some sort of an idea how many rooms we will need . I think we will have a good turnout, so let us know that you are coming.

In my last email, I mentioned that I had been in Florida visiting my Mother. Well, my little brother, Peter Weiner, sent me the following email. Sorry Peter, it just slipped my mind, you can be sure that I will give you a call next year.

Big Bro,

How could you come to Fla. and not contact your Little Bro! Earl would be so ashamed of you (LOL). Next time you head south please
give us a call and/or a visit.

Oh by the way, my wife Karen and I will be in the area this fall, probably around Oct., dates have not been set. Have to visit the in-laws in Charleston and then children in Cincinnati. Hopefully we will make a pit stop in Marietta while in route. Will keep you posted.

Peter

Matt Dole sent me the following note, remember he got a job with a Columbus political organization.

Hi Rick - Another good update... except for the part about that "blogger,"
they're nothing but hacks! Actually, I am still in Marietta. Thanks to the internet and cell phones I am able to do most of the work from here for now. We'll see what the 2008 cycle brings, but in the mean time I continue with Trent Elliott at his family's company in addition to the consulting.

It was good to see an email from Wiona Porath as well. She helped me celebrate my 21st birthday in Marietta, which would make a great story for Selby... if I could remember anything from that night!
Speaking of the story that Matt can't remember, Shawn Selby is asking for your help in putting together a booklet of personal stories from your undergraduate days. You can pick up what he is looking for from our blog; http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/ Please remember, he has a cutoff date of November of this year. I sent him one, you can too!

Andy Byers sent me the following announcing the birth of his legacy, one who will be a new alum in time for our 60th anniversary! Congratulations Andy. I sent the picture along to Shawn to post in the blog, but apparently he's been too busy, if he doesn't get around to it shortly, I'll give it a shot myself.

Hey Rick, It's a little different to be on the alumni end of these emails, but I
guess such is life. Anyway, my fiance (Katie Lantz, Chi Omega, 2007) and I just
had a beautiful, healthy little boy named Scott. Attached to this email
are some pictures. As for myself, I have a few little things lined up. First, I
am finalizing my agreement with Parkersburg High School to be the Assistant
Coach for their Crew Team. Secondly, I am working temporary, part time jobs that
don't really amount for anything (this is what happens when you major in math
but don't want to teach or go to grad school). So, if there are any Marietta-central alumni looking for a mathematical or industrial related career starter, please get in touch with me. As for Katie, she is starting work as a manager of the new Marietta Walgreens alongside you, Rick, in January. Anyway, looking forward to homecoming and all the shebangs of the coming year(s).~Andy

Mark Schlicker sent this note agreeing with Al Masons email of last time. It shows how far we have come in our first 40 years. May the next 40 be as successful.

Rick, As a another founding member I have to agree with Al. We were the smallest and least significant frat on campus in 1968. All of you through the years have really done a great job. Congratulations. I wish I could be with you all for Homecoming this year but unfortunately, my wife Patti '69 has three herniated discs that must be addressed surgically. Best wishes and continued success. Mark A. Schickler, DPM

Hops sent me an answer to my question concerning the Alumni Update project. As you can tell, there was a glitch in the system over the summer. So if you filled it out in the last 3 or 4 months, please do so again. We know that there is some bad information there, please help us straighten it out. It will only take a minute. The address is; http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/

Hey Rick, I want to apologize for it taking me so long to respond back to you. We have been very busy since getting back. We had a very successful Delt Dah Day yesterday; pictures will be on the site soon. But along with Delt Dah Day, the Sternwheeler Festival was this weekend, so we were busy setting up and taking down the stage and selling programs. We've had 35 people update their information on the survey. The number is probably low because I made a mistake in the coding we I last updated it, so the form would not submit itself. It was like that for probably the whole summer. So if you could please push people to update their information, especially those who tried in the last 4 months; I'd appreciate it greatly.I also wanted to let you know that Greg Maloof '67 called me the other day to let me know that he is coming for hom ecoming this October for his 40th anniversary since graduating. On top of that we have rented out the new side room of The Brewery on FrontStreet for Saturday night, October 20th, during homecoming this year. Please pass this information onto the rest of the alums, especially those who are still close to Marietta. We would love to see a lot of alums come out for this, but we realize many of them are waiting for our 40th anniversary to come back to Marietta. Other than that, we are preparing for our fall rush, which will be taking place Sunday,September 16th, through Friday, the 21st. I'll keep you updated, Hops

Did you also notice that Greg Maloof is planning on being in town? I don't believe that I have ever met him so I'm looking forward to doing so. How about the rest of you founders? I know that there are several still in the Marietta area, come back this year also. It doesn't cost anything!

Also, for the locals, the chapter has rented the new room at the Marietta Brewery for homecoming. Show up and help them fill the place up. I'll be there.

Joe Mester sent me the next note. Congratulations to you and Julie on 30 happy years. He also sent me a new address, Ken Weaver. Ken was our first 2 term President. Welcome Ken, hope you can make homecoming. I hope that you and Julie can make it Joe, it's been a long time.

Rick, Sorry for not responding sooner but Julie and I recently spent a week in Hawaii to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Been trying to catch up ever since. I spoke with Ken Weaver and he sounded real positive about the delts 40th. He is still a math teacher and the varsity wrestling coach at Avon Lake HS and he was recently inducted into their sports hall of fame. His e-mail is **removed for privacy reasons**

I tried briefly to contact Mark Russell without success. I will try harder. Good luck with the new store. I remember working at Rinks in Marietta prior to and shortly after the store opened. It was fun (and a lot of work) setting up the store. I quit when they tried to move me from home improvements to toys right before Christmas. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

I assume you were visiting your mom in Florida? I hope she is doing okay. Tell her I was thinking of her. Say Hi to Jim and Darrell for me next time you talk with them. We don't know yet but there is a slight chance Julie and I may go to Marietta's homecoming this year as it is Julie's 30 year class reunion. Joe

That's about all I have for this week. Hope you all have a good weekend. Rick

P.S. I've gone all through the missing member list. So I"ll be starting over. Next time I'll give you the names of the bad addresses that I have, and am going to have to purge. If you can help with them, I appreciate it. If you are in contact with any of the missing (pick up the list at the chapter website the password is: **removed, if you need it please contact Rick or the chapter**) please pass this along to them and ask them to get in touch with me. Thanks!

Dear Brothers.

I shared this news with Rick a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to wait until things were in motion to make a public announcement.

My company is starting a business newspaper in Manchester, England, in December. I have accepted an offer to be an editor there. The company and I are in the midst of getting my paperwork clearance from the United Kingdom, but it looks like I'll be leaving Oct. 15.

It has been a dream of mine for years to be able to live in the United Kingdom. And being able to help start a newspaper from inception is an opportunity I can't pass up.

The reality of how big of a decision I've made is becoming more clear by the day as I sort through my belongings to figure out what I'll ship to the UK, what I'll put in storage, what I'll give away and what I'll throw out.

It also is brought into sharper focus every time I tell my varied groups of friends.

It has been almost two years since I started regularly returning to Marietta and became a more-involved alumnus, both with the Undergrads and with my fellow Alumni through this blog. I cannot put into words what the experiences I have had these past two years have meant to me.

I'm now going to be an ocean and five time zones away, so my involvement will have to be scaled back and my visits to Marietta will become less frequent.

Since Homecoming this year is after my tentative departure date, I won't be there this year. I am especially saddened by that as it is 15th reunion.

But I will be back for Homecoming next year for the 40th, even if I have to swim back across the Atlantic.

I will continue to do what I can to help with the blog, but I'm going to have to back away from the writing projects that I wanted to do for the 40th. I'm sure you all understand that such undertakings are made impossible by virtue of living on a different continent.

So this post doesn't sound so sad, let me say that I've been walking around with a perpetual smile on my face. I'm so excited about this next chapter in my life. I'm looking foward to the new people I'll meet and the places I will visit.

I am very happy and I hope you all, my Brothers, will share in this happiness.

Cheers!

Good morning everyone,

I have been a bit lax recently about writing this, but I just got back from vacation in Florida. While I was there, I got to visit with Al Morrison and his wife Patti. They are doing well, everyone is in good health and working hard. They are in the process of remodeling thier house so it was a bit of a mess, but you can see how nice it will be when it is finished. I really had a nice visit Al, hope to see you two again soon.

Here are a couple of dates for you all to mark down. Homecoming for this year is coming soon, October 19th thru the 21st. Make plans to come back to Marietta now. And we have a firm date for our 40th in 2008, October 24th thru the 26th, only 422 days from now. I hope to see everyone that year.

The school year has begun so the Marietta Delts are hard at work making sure they have another successful year. They have to be, since I haven't heard from anyone yet this fall. Good luck on a great year guys! If any alum happens to be going thru Marietta, be sure to stop by the house and say hello. The undergrads really do like to have the opportunity to visit with those of us who came first, and I can vouch for the fact that they are really a good group. So stop by and say hello.

While reading WMOA radio online, I got the following piece of news concerning Matt Dole, I suspect that it means that he has moved to Columbus. Congratulations Matt! Keep us informed as to how you are doing.

Ohio Political Blogger Takes New Post
Posted on: 08/16/2007
By Callie Lyons
A well-known, local political blogger has a new job.
Communications Counsel of Ohio announced this week that the Columbus- based public relations firm has added Matt Dole to the staff. Dole was formerly the publisher of LincolnLogsBlog.com, the only blog to be consistently ranked in the top ten most influential Ohio political blogs. Dole has significant experience helping businesses and political candidates. He's worked on more than 30 campaigns over the last ten years.
Dole is a 2001 graduate of Marietta College. He calls his new position the "opportunity of a lifetime".

I got the following letter from Winona Porath, the wife of Mike. They live in Tecumsch, Mi (wherever that is!) so if you are there and need a place to sleep, she has invited you. Thanks for the tip, I used it and managed to get in contact with Keith Zak. We had a nice long talk, and got caught up with each other.

Rick,
Well I am a bit better at communicating than my hubby, besides that, I
just LOVE all you guys. I feel like you are my family. Delts are always
welcome at the Porath Family Hotel…always open 24/7 for Delts.
Seriously, that http://zabasearch.com is a great way to locate people. I use
it at work all the time to track people down. I hope you can use it to
find some others.
Hope your move to Marietta goes great! It is such a great place, I wish I could move back there…although maybe that would take away some of the magic…
Take care, Wiona
I recently got an email address for Al Mason, one of our founders. I contacted him and got this reply, it's always nice to find someone from our past. Al, you may be hearing from Shawn Selby for a booklet he is planning for our 40th Anniversary. He may want to pick your brains, fair warning here!

Hi Rick, Yes, you have Al Mason, one of the original founders of the frat house
at Marietta. It was great visiting the house. I was pleasently surprised to see how well Delt is doing. I was surprised, no, shocked to see how poorly the state of affairs is for the other houses. Keep me posted of events, thanks for your e-mail.

Sincerely, Al Mason

Speaking of the booklet for our 40th, time is running short for submitting your story to Shawn. I have sent my effort to him and have had the pleasure of his response telling me it was pretty good. Bravo for me! I'm learning how to write. Send yours in, he has put a deadline of November 2007, so he can get it all put together. His email address is: **removed for privacy reasons**

I got the following note from Trent Elliott, thanks for the offer Trent I will take you up on your kind offer. And if I come back in a Uhaul, I'll let you know so you can help me unload!

Rick,

Now that you have secured your house, please let me know when
you are officially "in." I'm always in the mood to buy a brother a welcome
home cocktail.

As a result of our email letters, Steve Fox and Ted Smith have gotten back in touch with each other, and I'm sure that others have used the email list to find lost brothers. You can access the email list at the chapter website, http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ The password to access the list is **removed, if you need help with it please contact the chapter or Rick Neel**. While you are there, take a minute to update the alumni records. We know that we have some bad data, and need your help to correct the errors.

The new addresses that I have this week are from Matt Mancall and Keith Zak Welcome guys! Hope to see you back in Marietta soon.

The people that I need help finding this week are: Paul Kelly '85, Mike Malone '85, John Rhein '85, Jon Townshend '85, Duane Stokes '88, Steve Newton '66, Peter Rosenberger '67 and Peter Ross '67

Thats all I have this week, hope all is well in your lives! Rick Neel '73

Good morning to everyone,
Today is a pretty good day for me, I recently took possesion of my house in Marietta (as much possession as I can take while still in the desert), so it is one step closer for me to be going home. Come on Walgreens, get that store open!

As I mentioned last time, I got a couple of volenteers to help find missing brothers from the 90's. Smitty and Gib are looking for our missing. Well Smitty has found 3 so far! And with some help from a list Hops sent me, I found 2 myself. I'll be sending the appropriate part of that list to you two, to help you out. Bear with me. I also got an updated address from one of our newest alums, Doug Orr. The new names I have gotten are: Andy James, Bruce Masatsugu, Eric Knapp, Buel Hall, and Rob Keber **all removed for privacy reasons** . To all of you, welcome home. We now hav e 240 addresses out of a roster of 352. Of those we are missing, some have passed away, some deactivated, some were expelled, and one (unfortunately) has requested that we not contact him. So I think that we are doing pretty well, not good enough yet, but we are getting there. We still need volenteers to help with other decades, if you can help please get in touch with me.

For you new guys, the purpose of this email campaign started out to get the greatest turn out possible for our 40th anniversary on the Marietta campus. That will happen at homecoming 2008. Please make plans to join us in Marietta at that time. Let's have a HUGE turnout and take over the Town House!

Since then it has kind of taken on a life of its own, we now have blogspot, http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/ . Please be sure to check it out and read what Shawn Selby has to say, and the pictures that we are now able to post. If you have any pictures that you want to share with us, please send them to me and I'll get the to Shawn for posting. We had requests for this and now that we have it, no pictures...

Also check out the chapter website, the undergrads have done a bangup job with it. While you are there, take a minute and fill out the Alumni Database form http://www.marietta.edu/~delts/ . While you are there you can also access the Alumni email list and get in contact with the brothers you went to school with (and let me know about anyone you are in contact with that we don't have listed). The password to access the list is; **removed, if you need it contact Rick Neel or the chapter**.

Now let's get on to what I have heard since the last email. Jake Dornan sent me the following email, and I have the answer you wanted Jake. Smitty came up with the address. Hope it is still good, let me know one way or the other would you? Thanks.

Rick,
You do such a good job at tracking down Delt alumns, I thought I might ask
you to help. A few of us Delts got together this past weekend in Marietta
(Trevor Brown, Matt Dole, Matt Joy, Brian Wolfe and myself),
and we started asking about a close brother, Buel Hall. Buel was my little
brother and a dear friend of mine and Brian's. We have no means of contacting
him because all the numbers that we had for him are no longer current, and the
listing in the phone book is also incorrect. So, if you don't mind... send out
the Delt-bat signal that Brian 'Wolfie' Wolfe and Jeremy 'Jake' Dornon are
trying to track his sorry self down. Any contact info that anyone might have
that is valid and current would be much appreciated!
Jeremy ' Jake ' Dornon, 2002.

Steve Fox sent me the following note and I sent the address. Hope that you and Ted have gotten in touch Steve.

Hi Rick,

Is it possible for you to forward me Ted
Smith's
email address? We were roommates and I would like to
try and hook up with him. Thanks for your help.

Steve Fox

Good afternoon everyone,

I have had a couple of volunteers to help locate our missing brothers, and ironically both stepped forward the same day. "Smitty" Smith and "Gib" Gibson both have volunteered to attempt to locate our missing brothers from the 1990s. Good luck guys, and thank you very much for stepping up.

I'm still looking for volunteers to look for the missing from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and the ’00s. Let me know if you are able to help.

Joe Mester sent me a note saying he is going to try to get in touch with a couple of ex-presidents.

Rick,

After reading your most recent e-mail I went in the basement and located a 1995 Delta Tau Delta Directory that I bought (I guess back in 1995), and looked up the 1995 addresses for Mark Russell and Ken Weaver. I then did a white pages search for them on the MSN internet site. I found matching addresses (which I guess means they haven't moved in the last 12 years).

(Contact information removed for privacy reasons.)

The 1995 directory lists Mark as a dairy farmer and Ken as a wrestling coach. When we had the 25th anniversary I called Mark to encourage him to attend but he couldn't get away from the cows. I would believe his situation would not have changed. So getting him to come to the 40th will probably not occur. I will call both and get e-mail addresses from them to at least get them in the e-mail loop.

DTD national could be a good resource for a print-out of EU Alumni members addresses (and other information) currently on file. It might require a vice-pres authorization (and hopefully at no cost).

If you need me to look up others that were established alumni in 1995 send me a note.

Joe

Thanks Joe, let me know what you find out, will you? Also, any of you that live in Maine or the Cleveland area that can, give the guys a call and say "Hi" and let them know we are looking for them.

Speaking of finding lost Brothers, we also had the good fortune of having a lost Brother find us. Just before graduation, Al Mason '68, one of our founders stopped by the Chapter house and spent some time visiting with the undergrads. That is great news, welcome back Al!

Here is the note I got from Hunter Jonsson with the information about Al as well as an update on him and his new job. Thanks Hunter, and good luck in Houston!

Hey Rick,

I do have the address for Al Mason. I apologize for not sending it right away, I had planned on emailing him myself but then finals came and graduation and the The Move. I should have just expedited right to you.

Anyhow, I'm sure Andy gave you the low down, but apparently Mr. Mason has had zero contact with the Chapter (or the school) and just happened to be driving by Marietta on I-77 and thought he would drop in. I know Andy mentioned the 40th but I don't know if he mentioned the Blog, Web site or newsletter.

(Contact information remove for privacy reasons.)

His little brother is Joe Ferrell (unconfirmed).

I hope you are excited about your move. I'm looking forward to visiting Marietta and seeing the folks in the community that I have missed, and I'm glad you will be joining those folks. As for me, I'm just about settled in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston and I start work with Weatherford on Monday. It will nice to finally have a paycheck coming in!

Take care Rick and sorry again for the delay.

Hunter

P.S. - I don't know if Hops mentioned it, but www.mcdelts.org will also get you to the Chapter homepage now.

Did you notice the new link to get to the Chapter Web site? Hops keeps moving our site forward, we are lucky to have him, be sure to check it out. The password to access the address list and the Chapter meeting minutes is: (Removed. Contact the Chapter or Rick Neel for the password.)

I got a couple of emails from Shawn Selby concerning the stories we are requesting for the 40th.

I just did a post on the Blog about what I'm looking for in terms of the Delt stories.

He also sent me a response to my question about whether he had gotten any thing yet. So please start to think about what you have to share. Make note that he will quit taking stories in November, 2007.

No, haven't gotten anything. And that's why I decided to do a separate post giving some instructions. We really hadn't said anything other than "send us your stories" without any guidance on what exactly to do. So now that that's spelled out, hopefully we'll get some.

(Honestly, I hadn't really thought about what I wanted until your last email, and then I thought I needed to get off my butt and give some structure to the idea.)

In a few weeks I'll write and post my "story" as an example and that will be another way to encourage everyone. Hey, write up a story and we can post that one too as another example :-)

Plus, you should probably link to the post in your next email and give some more encouragement. Maybe even tell everyone not to be afraid of my editing techniques lol!

Please don't be afraid of what he will do to your story, he really doesn't draw blood when he edits. He does all of mine when they hit the Blog! (And I have to admit that they are improved.)

Matt Dole tells me that he is going to get in touch with the administration and firm up the dates for the 2008 Homecoming weekend. I don't know what Hartsy has with you either, but you tell us, is his comment deserved?

Hey Rick,

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear you're on track to return to Marietta. The Walgreen's construction is causing havoc with my favorite Chinese restaurant in town, but I won't hold you responsible for that.

I'll check with the folks at the college on the date for Homecoming, I assume they have it firmed up by now and I will let you know.

As for Hartsy's email, I just wanna know why that guy doesn't like me!

msd

I got some financial information from Fergie the other day. I'm going to include it here so you can see how we sit financially.

Financial numbers:
Checking: $750
Savings: $1,000
CD $5,600

He also sent me some information for an Alumni Development Conference, for people who are interested in volunteering to work with the fraternity. It is very low cost so if you are interested in going, contact Tim Nelson at International headquarters: delts@delts.net.

Another item for guys who want to get involved in the Fraternity is the John W. Fisher Alumni Development Conference. This year in Cincy on Aug 10-12. All expenses are paid except for $49. This would be something you might want to participate in this year or next year. If interested, you can still register by July 21, 2007. Tim Nelson is the guy in charge.

Fergie also tells me that he and Nick Aylward went to a leadership conference in May. Glad to know that it is helpful, and that the money the fratenity gets is put to a positive use.

I don't know if I told you or not that Nick Aylward, president of the Chapter, and I went to Indianapolis for the Presidents and Chapter Advisors in May. It was very helpful and helped with communications between the two of us. Well done but very concentrated.

I also got an updated address from Andy Byers. To all of you new alumni, when you pick your new address please be sure to remember us here. And your snail mail address to Hops!

That's all I have for this time, have a good week.

The EU anthology

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Rick has mentioned a couple of times that I’m looking to compile a booklet of Brothers’ stories about their Undergraduate days with the Chapter.

This is my goal: To write a comprehensive history of the Chapter’s early days paired with first-person stories spanning all 40 years of Epsilon Upsilon.

To accomplish the first part, I’m going to be contacting and interviewing our founding members. But for the second part, I’ll need the help of everyone who is willing to participate by sharing a story.

Here are some guidelines that I think will be helpful for everyone, including myself:

1. Your story should be about one event or memory. Don’t try to sum up your four years of Undergrad Delt life. Pick your favorite memory and write about it.

2. Be as descriptive and as specific as possible in recounting the memory or story you wish to share. For example: Saying it happened in April of 1977 is better than saying it happened during the spring semester of 1977. Also, be mindful that places have changed or no longer exist. Say what they were. Example: “I lived in Putnam Hall, which was a large freshman dorm at the corner of Putnam and Seventh streets.”

3. We are all entitled to our histories and we shouldn’t whitewash them, but if your story does involve recounting something that would be embarrassing or harmful today to another Brother or Brothers, please seek their permission first.

4. I’m not going to set a limit on length. It can be as long or as short as it needs to be.

5. If you aren’t a writer, that’s OK. No one expects you to be. I’ll be editing what you write in order to help you tell your story. I’ll be asking you questions and giving you feedback. Don’t sweat the small stuff: I’ll clean up misspellings and bad grammar.

6. Submission: The best way to do this will be for you to write your story in Microsoft Word and email the file to me at sselby@crain.com. Put “Delt story” in the message line.

7. And finally, deadline: I will stop accepting stories on Nov. 1.

I hope that helps explain what we are looking to do and what our expectations are for this project. I’m really looking forward to reading your stories. Please write one. Your Brothers will appreciate reading them, too.

Oh, and if you have a background in journalism or literary stuff and would like to help with the editing of all this, please let me know! I am not Hell-bent on doing this by myself.

Now for the nasty-but-necessary stuff: Your submissions will become property of the Crescent Colony of Marietta Inc., which will serve as the owner of the copyright. I reserve the right, on behalf of CCoM Inc., to reject or edit any submission for whatever reason or reasons I deem necessary.

You also agree to give us your first born child, your Social Security Number and access to all your bank accounts .... blah blah blah.

Sunday, July 08, 2007

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I have written anything and I don't know where to start with this. So let's start out and see where we get.

On a personal note, I have closed on my house in Marietta. So I will be moving home as soon as the new Walgreen's is ready to open. I'm getting pretty excited about it, so I hope that nothing happens to delay the move. At present, it is supposed to be the first of the year. To all of you in the Marietta area, I'm looking forward to seeing you. My new address will be **removed for privacy reasons** Stop by to see me when I get there.

Hartsy sent me a note concerning my move:

Hi Rick,
Good to hear you’ll be in Marietta again. You can help Ferg keep Dole out of trouble.

Enjoy that dry Arizona heat while you still can. Then again, ovens are dry, and they cook turkeys!!!
JH

I don't know about keeping Dole out of trouble, you have probably noticed that Ferg is white-headed, I suspect that came from Dole. Concerning the Arizona heat, my air conditioner died yesterday, so I had to replace it with only about 4 months to go before I leave. Pissed me off, that was $250 that I didn't want to have to spend.

Shortly after I sent out my last email, I got a letter that kind of upset me. It was from Genworth Life Insurance Co. wanting to sell me long term care insurance. The mail was covered by a note from Jim Russell of our International Headquarters. I wrote to Jim asking for the reasoning behind this. He responded with the Fraternity's thinking. I will include our conversation here:

Hello Jim,

Today in the mail I received something that was of major concern to me. It was a letter from Genworth Life Insurance Co. wanting to sell me long-term care insurance. This letter had a cover sheet with your signature. Now granted, this is a service that I may need to consider in the future, and the price for it is skyrocketing out of control.

However, I find it very disconcerting to think that DTD would sell my address to anyone, for any reason. I don't think that this action fits very well with the "Four Fundemental Principals of Delta Tau Delta." Specifically Faith. I have faith that DTD will protect my privacy.

If this is a policy of DTD to help generate revenue to help the Fraternity in it's mission, I feel it is short-sighted. However, if necessary, I would like to request that my name and address not be released for this purpose in the future.

Fraternally,
Rick Neel,
Marietta College '73

Jim's response:

Rick,
Yes, the Fraternity does share its mailing list with selected vendors on a very limited basis. It has done so for several years, just as college and university alumni associations do. This is also true for professional associations and other membership groups.

The Arch Chapter has reviewed, given its approval and delegated this responsibility to the Central Office staff under the direction of the executive vice president. Delta Tau Delta works with a third-party source, Affinity Marketing, which also represents a number of other national fraternities and sororities. Affinity Marketing reviews and screens prospective vendors for Delta Tau Delta and we provide final approval. Only those vendors who meet the required criteria are accepted. Obviously, there are some vendor categories deemed not to be appropriate at all by Delta Tau Delta and other fraternal clients.

The revenue derived from this partnership goes to the Delta Tau Delta General Fund which helps to support the programming needs of the Fraternity. We believe this is a reasonable trade-off and has not been viewed negatively by our members. In the 5+ years I have served as the executive vice president, I believe you are only the second alumnus member to express concern about this practice directly to me.

Please be assured we will continue to conduct this program with care and respect to our members. Per your request, I also will ask that your name be deleted from future solicitations from outside the Fraternity.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention.

Fraternally,
Jim Russell

My return to Jim:

Jim,
Thank you so very much for your response and explanation of the use of the Delt mailing list. I also appreciate your willingness to remove my name from said uses.

With your permission, I would like to include my email to you and your response in my next email (and subsequent posting on our Blog-http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/).

With your help a couple of years ago and MC Delts forwarding addresses to me, we have developed an email address book of over 200 EU brothers, which is about 65% of the membership.

We are making plans for our 40th anniversary on the Marietta campus which will occur in October of 2008, and I would like to invite you to Marietta for the occasion. We are anticipating quite a turnout for the weekend.

I hope you can work us into your schedule.

Fraternally,
Rick Neel

Jim responded thusly:

Rick:
You are most welcome to include my response to you in your blog as you see fit.

I look forward to being in Marietta in October 2008 for the chapter's 40th anniversary. There will be plenty to celebrate.

Fraternally,
Jim

So there you have it. And I hope that you all noticed that Jim Russell will be joining us in Marietta for our 40th anniversary. Please come and introduce yourselves to him, he is a super individual and a great example of what a Delt should be.

Speaking of our 40th Anniversary, Matt have you gotten a firm date from the college yet? Seems to me that we were waiting for the OAC meetings that are scheduled for this summer to firm up the date. Check on that for us will you? Thanks.

As I wrote in email #47 we are still looking for people to contact brothers and encourage them to come to the festivities. Also, please send your stories to Shawn Selby, so he can get the booklet together. This is what I wrote last time:

Plans are beginning to shape up for our 40th anniversary. If there is
anything special that any of you would like to see included in the weekend, please let me know.

I'm looking for volunteers to get in personal contact with all of us. My thinking is that one or two people could get together and chase down all of the brothers in a given 1/2 decade. For instance, someone for the 60's, someone for 1970-1974, someone for 1975-1979, and so on. Please don't be shy, step forward and volunteer.

Also, don't forget to send your stories and memories to Shawn Selby sselby@crain.com for inclusion in the booklet he is working on for that weekend. Time is running out, remember, it takes time to put that type of thing together.

One of the things that we are kicking around is to rent the Valley Gem Sternwheeler for a night. We can keep the price reasonable if there is enough interest, but we feel that we should get a feeling from the group as far as interest. Please let me know what your feelings are.

On the same lines, we are 40 years old now so we have people on all ends of the economic spectrum, what do you feel is a budget that we can all live with for this event? Please let me know what your feelings are on this also.

Some news from our brothers; Craig Sundstrom sent me the following note, please check it out. It is pretty special that two Delts got to make Jewett Orations at the same Commencement.

Hey Rick,
Just wanted to let you know that both Dan May's and my own Jewett Commencement orations are posted on the school's Web site. It was definitely a treat to share the stage with a Delt brother at the ceremony.

As soon as I know my new contact e-mail for law school, I'll be in touch. I hope all is well.

Fraternally,
Craig Sundstrom '07

Richard Wolf sent me the following note, I wanted to point out that when we get older, we have to switch to Lite beer so we can keep our gut hidden!

Hey you old poop!!!! Have you relocated to Marietta yet?

Just checking in with you ... have a couple of things to update you on but meanwhile I am out with friends on lovely Lake Hamilton working on polishing off a 30-pack of icy cold Miller Lite.

Holler at me if you get a chance.

Richard

He hasn't sent me the update yet (perhaps it was the Miller Lite???) but he did let me know how his wife and daughters were doing:

Rick:
Running this business has been a 24/7 challenge ... not much playtime the last 2 years.

Sarah received her Master's and is employed as a Human Resources Generalist at a hospital in Waterbury, CT.

Megan will be a junior in the fall but is leaving for Australia on July 10 to do her first semester at a university in Perth; should be home mid-December. She is also studying for the MCAT which she will take this Friday.

Patsy is the rock ... 28 years on July 28.

Thanks for asking ... Very anxious to see you again at some point in the future ...

Richard

That's pretty special, 28 years of marriage. Congratulations to the 2 of you! May you make it another 28.

I got the following note from Dave Silverstein giving me an address change. Bruce Miller also sent me a new address. Be sure to update them in your records, and I hope I sent them to you Hops, if not you have them now! We didn't get any new addresses this time, so I'll throw some new ones at you. Help me out if you can.

Please change my e-mail address to **removed**

Thanks,
Dave Silverstein '79

BAM's new address is: **removed** He is also in contact with Ric Gough and is working on getting us his address. Don't forget Bruce!

All right then, that is all the news that I have for this week. Here are some names for you to try to locate for me. Remember, we need them for the anniversary. This week I am giving the names of the past presidents that we are missing. Help me out with them will you?

Mark Russell '74, Ken Weaver '75, Jeffrey Myers '81, Duke Weller '82, Steven Bennett '84, Adam Pyles '85, Jeff Gardner '86, and Mike Conaty '89.

Have a good week and come see me in Marietta next year!

Good afternoon everyone,

Well if you haven't been checking out the Delt Blog, you have missed some exciting times. http://mcdeltalumni.blogspot.com/

We have learned how to post pictures! One of the recent requests is now up and running. These things take some time, but we got there. Thank you Shawn! At this point, if you have pictures that you would like to share with us, send them to me (and I will forward them to Shawn who will post them in the appropriate email). Since these emails go to some of you at work, we won't be able to post the pictures as an attachment to the email. Eventually Shawn will show me how to do this and I'll be able to.

Shawn has posted several articles in the blog, with the pictures he has posted. Check them out. He posted a link from WTAP TV in Parkersburg concerning the demolition of Dawes Library in preperation for the construction of the new one. He posted a few pictures he took at the Alumni Weekend, check them out.

He also got in contact with Matt Christman (his email address will be below) who sent him an update on his life. He and his partner Ray are the happy parents of a couple of children that they adopted. Congratulations you two! I won't tell the whole story here, go check it out and see the pictures. He also got an update about J.P. Clowes. Seems that he and his wife Nina are the parents of a new baby girl, Sarah Elizabeth. Congratulations to you two also. Check out that article and the pictures at the blog also.

Like I said, a lot has happened over there! Also, we have had over 1000 hits at the site now. Pretty good in 10 months.

Now on to the notes that I have received since my last posting. Tim Cox sent me the following, for those of you in the Danville, KY area go check out a play and say "Hi" to Tim.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for the updates.I love reading them.

I wanted to share some news with you for your next update.

I will be performing in four plays this summer at the Pioneer Playhouse, a summer stock company in Danville, Kentucky, from May 28th to August 6th. Danville is about two hours from Louisville and about 45 minutes from Lexington, Kentucky, so if anyone lives in the area, drop me a line at timcoxactor@yahoo.com.

Maybe we can catch up.

Have a great summer!

Lance Koved and Ashley Wollam both sent me notes about my upcoming move home. Thanks for the thoughts guys, but I have already bought a house, and am just waiting for closing. It is on Harmar Hill and about 10 minutes from campus (isn't everything in Marietta just 10 minutes away?). Ashley, I would love to own 507 Putnam, but unfortunatly it is out of my price range.

Rick:

Thanks for the periodic updates. I always enjoy them. I am surprised that you are moving back to Marietta since I believe you have spent most of the time since graduation in Florida and Arizona. I guess you will have to invest in cold weather clothing. Personally I've had it with cold weather and we continue to enjoy our house in Florida. I'm still working in Pennsylvania so I get enough of the cold on my visits once or twice a month.

Lance

Rick,
Are you interested in buying the old Delt house? If so, I can put you in contact with the owner. He’s looking to sell badly.
Cheers,
Ashley

Randy Williams sent me this note, with Dennis McNoboe's address. Welcome Dennis! I wish I had known Randy was in Denver, I had that weekend off and could have gone to see him! Ah well, next time.

Rick,

It must be a slow week. Dennis McNoboe's e-mail is **removed**. It is spelled Alderson Broaddus. He is the Associate Dean of Student Services/Director of Residence & Student Leadership. I just went to their web site in good old West Virginia. I am back in Lancaster. I sure enjoyed my time in Denver. I did little that was scheduled outside of my classes. I came back very relaxed. I enjoyed talking with you last weekend.

Let me know if I can do anything for you back here in Ohio. If by chance you will be in the BIG CITY on July 7th (Saturday), Nancy always has a big cookout, horse shoe championship, beer drinking, fireworks display at her place out past Whipple. You are always welcome.

See you soon,

AWK

I got a note from Hartsy concerning the replacement of the Shelter (all of you know, I'm sure that the house on 4th Street is on its last legs and won't last forever). He is in contact with the college and hopes to have some news soon. As I find out more, I'll be sure to let you all know.

Plans are beginning to shape up for our 40th anniversary. If there is anything special that any of you would like to see included in the weekend, please let me know.

Here are the new addresses that I have received, drop your friends a line and say hi, both of you will appreciate it. **the addresses have been removed for privacy reasons** Sean Bailey, Dennis McNoboe, Matt Sutko, Joshua Downey and Matt Christman.

This weeks missing Delts are (I've asked for most of the missing, pretty soon I'll be starting over!): Steven Blumenfeld '80, Stephen DeLong '80, Bruce Goldfarb '83, Richard Ptak '83, Kelly McKerahan '85, Rudy Harjanto '87, and Duane Stokes '88.

Have a good week.

In which Shawn pretends he is Rick, episode two

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

Via Charley Maghes '95, I am happy to report that J.P. Clowes '93 and his wife Nina became parents of a daughter over the weekend.

Sarah Elizabeth was born on June 1, weighing 6 pounds and 12 ounces. Mom, dad and older brother and future Delt Michael are all doing well.

Congratulations, J.P.! Virtual cigars for everyone!

In which Shawn pretends he is Rick

While giving updates on alumni is normally Rick's province, I recently made contact with Matt (Christman) Christman-Lees '94, so I thought I'd pass on what he's been up to.

Matt and his partner of 11 years, Ray, are living in Worthington, Ohio. Matt is a communications consultant in the IT department at Nationwide Insurance. Last June, Matt and Ray adopted two Haitian children -- Jenny, age 7, and future Delt Aaron, who just turned 4 this week. (A family photo is below.) Matt says they hope to add more children to their family soon.

Matt says he misses going to the Mountaineer in Parkersburg (hey, Undergrads, you didn't invent going there!).

Matt would love to hear from everyone. I'm passing along his email address to both Rick and Hops, so it will be added to the Alumni database soon, which you can access on the Chapter's Web site.

As you all can see, we've figured out how to post photos, so if you'd like to include photos with any updates you send to Rick, feel free to do so. We won't be able to have the photos be a part of Rick's emails, but we can add them to the blog when we post his email updates there.

Cheers!
Shawn
